A Japanese death-row inmate was hanged on Thursday.
68-year-old Masanori Kawasaki had been sentenced to death for fatally stabbing his sister-in-law and her 2 granddaughters in Sakaide, western Japan, in 2007.
The hanging was the fifth round of execution under the current government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. It brings to 9 the total number of people executed since the administration was launched near the end of 2012.
Justice Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki, who ordered the execution, told reporters that Kawasaki's murders were extremely cruel in nature. He said the death sentence was finalized after due examination by the courts.
Tanigaki said he sees no need to review Japan's capital punishment system. He added he will continue to closely follow public debate over the death penalty.
