Turkey and Kazakhstan have signed a deal to bring their relations up to the level of a strategic partnership.
The protocol to establish the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council was signed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana on Wednesday. We are now not just friends or brothers but, at the same time, we are, in a real sense, strategic partners, said Erdoğan. We will make apparent our joint efforts to develop in terms of cooperation with this agreement. We have entered a period during which words will translate into action and thoughts will become [concrete] projects, he added.
Erdoğan said the current beneficial, mutual support and cooperation between Turkey and Kazakhstan at international institutions will continue. We are always with Turkey, Nazarbayev added. According to data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), the trade volume between the two brotherly nations increased one-third to become nearly $3 billion last year compared to a year earlier.
Nazarbayev, who met with Erdoğan for nearly an hour-and-a-half after they attended a welcoming ceremony at the Akorda Presidential Palace of Kazakhstan in Astana, later presided over a joint meeting of delegations from the two countries.
The Kazakh president explained at the beginning of the meeting the example Turkeys recently achieved economic success has provided to the rest of the world as well as its strengthened regional position. He said to Prime Minister Erdoğan: Turkeys gross domestic product [GDP] level of $200 billion under your leadership has grown to the level of $800 billion. This is a great achievement for you and your party. Nazarbayev said Turkish businessmen have put their signature on the great success of rebuilding Kazakhstan and especially its capital, Astana. He added that Turkish businessmen have provided large contributions to the Central Asian countrys public works and have brought $2.5 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) since its independence in 1991. The president also added that two Turkish universities and 28 Kazakh-Turkish high schools are operating in his country.
Erdoğan, who began his speech by addressing Nazarbayev as the Turkish worlds wise man, thanked the Kazakh president for the attention he and the accompanying Turkish delegation, which included Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan, Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON) President Rızanur Meral and Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) President Mehmet Büyükekşi, had received.
On Thursday, Erdoğan met with Chairman of the Kazakh Parliament Nurlan Nigmatulin and Speaker Kayrat Mami of the senate of the Kazakh Parliament.
