At least 71 bodies have been pulled from the banks of the Ganges River in eastern India, as a second Covid-19 wave ravages the country and engulfs its healthcare system.

Local authorities are investigating and a postmortem of the bodies was carried out, but "due to heavy decomposition, we were unable to determine the cause of death," officials in the Bixar district of Bihar state said in a statement Tuesday.

Indian media quoted Ashok Kumar, a local official for the town of Chausa in Buxar district, who corroborated reports of the discovery of bodies circulating on social media. However, Kumar told the Press Trust of India that authorities "cannot confirm whether the deceased were indeed COVID-19 positive." CNN could not reach the official on Monday.

District officials have collected the bodies for autopsies but said in a statement that the condition of the bodies suggested they had been in the water for three to four days.

Buxar officials said that based on the condition of the bodies, authorities believe the bodies came from further upstream -- possibly from the states of Uttar Pradesh or Uttarakhand.

"It is clear that the bodies are not from Buxar district. But it is possible that they have floated down the river from other cities situated along the river," the statement read.

Buxar borders India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, where a lockdown was extended over the weekend until May 17. As coronavirus infections continue to rise, at least 24 of India's 36 states and union territories are under full lockdowns, according to CNN data compiled from state governments.

In a press conference, district official Aman Sarin told local reporters an investigation is underway to identify and determine cause of death for the bodies collected on the banks of Chausa.
Video circulating on social media and published on Indian news outlets purports to show the bodies floating in the water close to the river bank.

What if criminals are taking advantage of covid to commit murders and disposing bodies in the river?

You can perform autopsy on the floating bodies. If you burned the body first however...

I can't believe that some people actually dip in this water, and even worse drink it :(

Well India diverts water from Ganges to keep their port (Haldia) near Kolkata navigable, so we hardly get any water - we do cleaner get water from Teesta up in Assam which mixes in with the minimal Ganges water. The dirty water from Ganges does not get as far as Bangladesh because of the distance (many hundreds of miles). Even in Bangladesh no one I know bathes in this water as everyone knows it is polluted.

The river is called Padma when it enters Bangladesh. We are building a huge 7 km bridge on it, which is almost done. By the time we get the water from all the Bangladeshi tributaries, the river is very large (2 KM across in some places).

That is a relief for Bangladesh.. Could building a dam to block it off an option and only take the one from Teesta

Bangladesh Water Development Board had a plan for a barrage (partially implemented) but the way flooding occurs it will be a huge investment to complete (many thousand of crores). So maybe close but no cigar. If we build a dam past their Farakka dam - India will surely see it as a hostile act. They might mobilize their military. Timing is not yet ripe for us. :azn:

Political cost is high because it would for sure back up water and cause floods during monsoon in West Bengal and Bihar since they never spend money to dredge their rivers.

It will also be satirically hilarious Bangladesh telling India bro I just don't that river down-streaming into my lands.. They will ask why you don't want extra water but the answer would be nah it is just dirty please do keep that extra water inside your border.. A country rejecting another country's river this has never happened before and goes to show you how much the ganges is mismanaged and polluted
