Wedding celebrates cross-border harmony

On either side of the border between India and Pakistan, two elite influential families, including one of Pakistan’s top political family currently in power, ceremoniously entered into a relationship by virtue of the marriage of their children in Chandigarh on Friday.

Daughter of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s younger brother Shahbaz Sharif, who is presently the Chief Minister of Punjab province of Pakistan, got married with the grandson of Lt General (retd) P N Hoon, a former Indian Army commander.

Lt Gen Hoon is well-known for his anti-Pakistan rhetoric, especially when it comes to commentary on Indo-Pak relations and posturing amid provocations from the other side of the LoC.

He is also believed to be an RSS ideologue. Shahbaz Sharif was made the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province for the fourth time in June this year after his party, the PML-N, swept the general elections that made his elder brother Nawaz Sharif the prime minister of Pakistan.

An impressive marriage ceremony took place during the day on Friday, a day considered auspicious by the Muslims, while a gallant reception was arranged at a swanky five-star hotel in Chandigarh in the evening. The event was a testimony to the recognition and blend of cultures, identities and ideologies sans borders.

Pakistan Punjab province Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s daughter Khabija entered into a wedlock with Lt Gen Hoon’s grandson Kanv Pratap Singh.

Khabija is Sharif’s daughter from his third wife, family sources said. He was not present during any of the ceremonies. For reasons best known to the family, the welcome notice outside the venue read “Somya weds Kanv.” The high profile reception witnessed a host of VVIP’s from the two nations. The list of invitees was carefully crafted and later pruned to make the event a close-knit wedding. Some Punjab MLAs were also present at the marriage.

If sources are to be believed, both the bride and the groom have studied in the US.
After studying in the prestigious Lawrence school in Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh, Kanv completed his MBA from US. Lt Gen Hoon has a plush two-kanal (1000-square yards) bungalow in Panchkula. He has various business interests in the city.

CHANDIGARH: It should ideally have been one of the most high-profile marriages in the Indian sub-continent for obvious reason that the bride is the niece of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the daughter of the Pakistan’s Punjab province Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. And the groom is the grandson of a high-flying retired Indian Army General PN Hoon.

However, the marriage was kept a low-key affair for political and religious implications it may have in Pakistan as the fundamentalists there may not accept the marriage of the niece of their Prime Minister to a Hindu boy from India. And probably that explains the absence of both Nawaz and Shahbaz from all the ceremonies.

Nawaz Sharif’s niece Khabija on Friday got married to the grandson of former Indian Army Lt General PN Hoon Kanv Pratap Singh. The marriage was solemnised at a Chandigarh hotel in presence of family members and close friends. While entire family from the boy’s side was present, only the mother of the girl, Nawaz Sharif’s sister-in-law was in attendance.

Khabija is the daughter of Shahabaz Sharif’s third wife. Shahbaz himself so far is married four times and is currently living with his fourth wife.

Khabija and Kanv reportedly met in the United States where both were studying together. Kanv completed his MBA from the US after studying in the prestigious Lawrence School in Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh.

The marriage which was interesting for the obvious reasons of not only being cross border, but also between the first family of Pakistan and an ex-Indian Army General who is known for his strong anti-Pakistan rhetoric. General Hoon is an RSS ideologue and holds a hawkish position on India-Pak relationship. He is settled in Panchkula on the outskirts of Chandigarh city.

Leading Bangalore-based daily Deccan Herald commented on the marriage, “On either side of the border between India and Pakistan, two elite influential families, including one of Pakistan’s top political family currently in power, ceremoniously entered into a relationship by virtue of the marriage of their children in Chandigarh on Friday.”

Love sans border woes - Hindustan Times

Cross-border bonhomie couldn’t get more pronounced. In Panchkula on Friday, Kanav Pratap Hoon, the grandson of Siachen hero Lt Gen Prem Nath Hoon (retd), tied the knot with Samiya Siddiq of Lahore, Pakistan, in a court marriage.

Kanav, 27, and Samiya, 26, had met in Dubai for the first time and fell in love. Samiya is the daughter of Shazia Siddiq and Mian Muhammad Siddiq while the Hoons are natives of Abottabad in Pakistan. Kanav helps in his family’s business of Hyundai dealership at Chandigarh’s Industrial Area.

At the lunch organised on Friday at Taj Chandigarh, Sector 17, for close friends and relatives of the bride and groom, many guests from Pakistan were also in attendance. Prominent local politicians included Punjab MLAs Kewal Singh Dhillon, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi and Rana Gurjit Singh.

Though the bride and groom refused to talk to the media, Lt Gen Hoon came forth to clear the rumour that the girl belongs to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family. “It is a lie. People should do their homework (before making such statements),” he said.

On getting a Pakistani bride for his grandson, Lt Gen Hoon remarked, “It is a good development that relations are being tied across the border,” and added, “People across the border should meet often. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should talk to our prime minister.

Recently, they had talked about a demographic change being introduced in Rajouri [a district in Jammu].” Hoon said “whosoever is living in India is an Indian,” and that “giving respect and talking are two different things.”

The former commander of Indian Army’s Western Command, Lt Gen Hoon was heading 15 Corps regiment when India took over the highest battlefield in the world, Siachen. Operation Meghdoot was the codename of the military exercise undertaken to capture Siachen and launched on April 13, 1984.

Till today, Pakistan lays claim on the glacier.
