Dassault Receives Qatar's Down Payment for Rafales, Defense Exec Says

PARIS — Dassault Aviation has finally received a long-awaited down payment from Qatar for an order for 24 Rafale fighter aircraft, backing up a contract signed in May, a defense executive said today.

“It was paid today,” said the executive when asked about the delayed deposit. France now can book the deal in this year’s export orders. The executive declined to be identified as permission had not be granted to speak on the subject.

Dassault did not respond to a request for confirmation.

Dassault Chairman Eric Trappier said in October that the payment was in the process of being made.

The French fighter deal with Qatar includes MBDA missiles, training for 36 pilots and some 100 mechanics, worth a total €6.3 billion ($6.9 billion).

The down payment means the contract is now in effect, and French arms exports this year will total more than €15 billion including the Qatari deal, compared to €8.2 billion last year. The latter figure was the highest in five years and the second-highest in 10 years.

The sale to Qatar boosts sales for prime contractor Dassault, radar and systems specialist Thales, and engine builder Safran. MBDA will supply the missiles.

A sharp drop in energy prices and the ensuing need to raise a loan through US banks led to the delay in the Qatari down payment, business daily Les Echos reported.

Qatar follows Egypt as export client for the Rafale, after Cairo signed in February an arms deal worth €5.2 billion which included 24 fighter jets.

Talks are continuing with the United Arab Emirates for the twin-engined fighter. India is negotiating an order for 36 Rafales off the shelf in a government-to-government deal.

Not a bad package for 24 jets, training and ammunition in 6 billion USD. Not bad at all.

Wonder if India's never ending MMRCA will do something....

I thought the Qatar was looking at our Typhoons after Kuwait confirmed a deal with BAE systems? Seems the Frenchies back-stabbed us again.:(

Qatar, UK discuss Typhoon purchase deal

. . . .
I wonder why these jets are simply sooo expensive? more than 5.2 billion EURO for 24 jets? They know how to milk ME..

The Higher the quality/standard, the higher the price.
Moreover, every developing country will always try and buy/purchase the very best available product in the market if they can afford it, only those who cant afford it will go for second hand/substandard ones since its cheaper.:)

Hi
$6.9 billion don't add up for 24 aircraft------. Over 250 million dollars per aircraft----wow

. . .
These plane worth more than their way golds like how much 10 ton gold would cost? well 10 ton cost slitely 339 million dollar that's less than how much Kuwait paid for the Euro fighter which is 400 million per plane Sooooo cheap.

Training, ammunition, technicians and technical support are very expensive and one can not but buy them. Peripheries cost twice as much as the aircraft itself. This where defense giants actually make their money. Remember 8 new F-16s of Pakistan are projected at $180 million per piece. 3 times the cost of fly away F-16.

People complain that 100M $ price tag for f35 is too high, but now, they are willing to pay 254Milion $ per each plane?
Obviously, they didnt add the golden pilot seat in it.. There is no really additional feature i might think of!
The only think might be the A-to-A, cruise missiles comes with it, but each of them would be a million$ additional. Are they going to fight against CHine alone? I dont think there might be that big difference... Something is wrong here...

at first, yes as an evaluation. then it went for the raffale. kuwait is getting 28 typhoons.
Yes,
I know Kuwait has already ordered typhoons from our defence giant BAE. However, outside Europe, BAE's Typhoons have so far been exported only to Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Austria(and soon Kuwait). That's just 4 countries, that's not really that impressive for such an advanced fighter which is considered the world's best pre 5th generation fighter jet. Even counting potential customers like Indonesia, Canada, Finland, Bahrain, Belgium and a few other countries with whom we are in talks for purchase of typhoons. Still I had though Qatar would have opted for the Typhoons since majority of its Gulf neighbours are opting for/already flying typhoons. Plus we seem to have more historical political influence/links with Gulf countries, so I expected us to bag this contract.

Plus I for once thought all European countries looking to replace their old fighters will automatically opt for the typhoon due to obvious reasons. But seems that's not always the case. Even countries like Poland with whom we are cooperating/helping patrol airspace against Russian aggression are not sure they would go for the typhoon as their next main fighters replacement. WTH? :(

Anyway let's see how things goes with other countries we are in talks with.

Congrats to the French though, you win some you lose some. :)
