Danish Queen Margrethe II becomes the first incumbent foreign head of state to visit the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in east China.

The Danish Queen spent about 40 minutes in the memorial hall Sunday morning and laid some flowers symbolizing peace during the visit.

Queen Margrethe II is paying a state visit to China from Thursday to Monday at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. In September 1979, she was the first Western head of state to visit China after the country's reform and opening-up policy.

Earlier, Danish Ambassador to China Friis Arne Petersen told the Chinese media that a Dane named Bernhard Arp Sindberg helped save more than ten thousand Chinese during the Nanjing massacre in 1937, a major historical bond between Denmark and China.

The Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then Chinese capital, in December 1937 during the Second World War. The atrocities occurred during a six-week period and about 300 thousand people were killed. Widespread rape and looting also occurred.

Several of the key perpetrators of the atrocities were later tried and found guilty at the International Military Tribunal of the Far East and the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal, and were executed.

All the other heads of state shy away from visiting the Nanjing site or any other places which mark their collective atrocities done in China
