In the aftermath of the Uri terror attack, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence MinisterManohar Parrikar today cleared proposals worth Rs 1,900 crore (close to $3 billion), including proposal for an electronic warfare system (EWS) for low-intensity conflict in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to an official, the EW system is worth Rs 330 crore and the technology can be used as a military force-multiplier.
WHY INDIA NEEDS EW SYSTEM?
The EW system can be utilised to jam high-powered ground radars, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) used by terrorists and to spot stealth aircraft operated by enemy countries. On the other hand, EW systems fitted on our own Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, aircraft and satellites would help us see deep inside enemy territories. The EW system needs high level of secrecy for maintaining surprise against adversary actions.
According to sources, Pakistan has evinced its interest in acquiring Russian surveillance systems, GPS and drone signal jammers. The four Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists, who attacked army's 12th Infantry Brigade headquarters in Uri last Sunday, brought with them two Japan-made wireless sets. A total of 48 items were recovered from terrorists, including GPS devices.
INDIGENOUS EW SYSTEM
Currently, India operates a portable EW system called Samyukta, which is touted to be the largest electronic warfare system in the country. The EW system was developed jointly by state-owned DRDO, Bharat Electronics Limited, Electronics Corporation of India Limited, and Corps of Signals of Indian Army. It can rule both communication and radar areas from both land and air.
The government had set up the DAC headed by the Defence Minister for decision making in regard to the totality of the new planning process.
