PRAGUE: The Czech ambassador to Pakistan died while trying to help wounded victims of the suicide attack at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad escape the inferno, a Czech newspaper reported on Monday.
Ambassador Ivo Zdarek, a 47-year-old father of two, could have fled the hotel just after the bombing, but he rushed back in to help pull people to safety, the daily Hospodarske Noviny said, citing an eyewitness.
He lost his life while he was inside the hotel trying to take the wounded out of the flames, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir told the newspaper.
He was able to leave immediately after the explosion, but he stayed in order to help the others, along with his Vietnamese friend. They were then trapped in the flames, Mir said.
Jaroslav Kalfirt, the Czech embassy's number two, said the ambassador answered his telephone five minutes after the blast and said he was safe and sound. But five minutes later, Zdarek called asking to be rescued.
Zdarek had been ambassador to Vietnam before taking up the Islamabad job, which he started just last month. He had been living at the hotel since arriving in Islamabad.
