Cyprus is nearing an agreement to sell natural gas to Egypt, marking the second potential supply deal in as many days with the North African country vying to position itself as a regional energy hub after the startup of the giant offshore Zohr field.

Cyprus would supply Egypt from the Aphrodite field, which was discovered by Noble Energy Inc. and contains an estimated 4.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. Noble Energy, with Delek Drilling-LP, said Monday it plans to sell gas to Egypt’s Dolphinus Holdings Ltd. from Israel’s Tamar and Leviathan deposits. Egypt’s government still must approve the proposed 10-year deal for shipments from Israel, the Egyptian oil ministry said Tuesday in an emailed statement.

“Cyprus is close to selling natural gas to Egypt’s liquefied natural gas plants, and we could reach an agreement in the coming weeks,” Energy Minister Georgios Lakkotrypis said in a telephone interview from Nicosia. The Egyptian LNG plants of Idku and Damietta lie some 400 miles (645 kilometers) south of Cyprus.

Gas discoveries off the eastern Mediterranean island -- together with deposits in Israel, the Zohr field off Egypt and prospects for reservoirs off Lebanon -- could create a center of gas production on Europe’s doorstep. While that has given a handful of nations access to vast resources, they’ve only just started to agree on the best way to export the fuel in a region rife with political enmity.

Turkey continues to block Rome-based Eni SpA from carrying out further exploratory drilling in Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone. Israel and Lebanon, meanwhile, have traded threats in recent weeks over their contested maritime border.

The area from Cyprus to Lebanon and Egypt may contain additional gas riches, and countries in the region are eager to develop export plans. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the area could hold more than 340 trillion cubic feet of gas, more than U.S. proven reserves.

“This is basically the moment when, finally, all the talk about turning Egypt into a regional gas hub is finally coming true,” Riccardo Fabiani, senior Mideast analyst for Eurasia Group, said.

Egypt’s Ambitions
Egypt, which used to export gas by pipeline to Israel and Jordan, expects to meet all its needs for the fuel later this year thanks to production from the Eni-operated Zohr field. The most populous Arab nation also has wider ambitions of once again supplying other countries. A new law in Egypt allows private companies like Dolphinus Holdings to import gas and re-export it through the country’s LNG facilities.

“Egypt is proceeding with its plan to achieve self-sufficiency in natural gas by year-end and a surplus in 2019, and moving ahead with its strategy to become a regional hub for energy,” the oil ministry said in an emailed statement. “This includes receiving gas from countries in the East Mediterranean area including Israel and Cyprus.”

Noble Energy and Delek Drilling-LP, the lead partners in Israel’s largest gas fields, proposed supplying around 64 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Egypt’s Dolphinus Holdings starting in 2020. Delek has said it expects Zohr output will just meet Egypt’s demand by 2023 and only for a limited time.

In Cyprus, Texas-based Noble Energy and Royal Dutch Shell Plc each own a 35 percent stake in the Aphrodite field, while Israel’s Delek controls the rest.

Calypso Field
“The fact that Shell Energy is the administrator of Egypt’s Idku liquefied natural gas plant favors such a deal,” said Charles Ellinas, chief executive officer of Nicosia-based energy consultant e-CNHC, referring to a potential agreement involving Cyprus and Egypt.

Cyprus has gas beyond Aphrodite. Total SA and Eni found small volumes in 2017 at the Onesiphorus field, confirming the existence of a carbonate platform similar to Egypt’s Zohr, which Eni has described as the largest find in the Mediterranean Sea. Eni also announced on Feb. 8 another discovery in the Calypso field in Cyprus’s Block 6 with “an extended gas column.”

Egypt’s government still must approve the proposed 10-year deal for shipments from Israel, the Egyptian oil ministry said Tuesday in an emailed statement.

And the parliament has sent a request for a full detailed beakdown of this deal that popped out of nowhere so they can approve it. Even they were taken by surprise with this.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the area could hold more than 340 trillion cubic feet of gas, more than U.S. proven reserves.

lol, people are having a tough time coming to terms on the amounts of gas in that whole area and the market effects it will cause.

Long time coming. About time they took the bull by the horns.

A new law in Egypt allows private companies like Dolphinus Holdings to import gas and re-export it through the country’s LNG facilities.

Just past last year and was briefly mentioned in the media, barely anyone took notice. They saw this coming but at least they're not singing off on anything without studying it in detail. That's a good thing.

8 another discovery in the Calypso field in Cyprus’s Block 6 with “an extended gas column.”

And we shall see how block 6 plays out in the next coming months.

I personally think Egyptian government is more interested in utilizing a significant portion of Cyprus and Israel raw gas as a feeding stock for Egyptian petrochemical industry and reexport it in the form of petrochemical products such as fertilizers, plastics and other types of chemical products.

Egyptian prime minister said that if a third LNG plant is required then Egypt is willing to build one more.
The Egyptian petrochemical sector will boom as a result of the discoveries in Greece and Israel .

i believe it will create tensions among Mediterranean countries ... a new era of uncertainty to begin very soon

The main countries Israel , Cyprus (EU) and Egypt have agreed on economic zones borders and how the gas will be extracted and exported. Lebanon and Syria will join soon via the Arab pipeline which has already been built 2 decades ago when Egypt exported gas to Syria , Lebanon and Jordan . Now Syria and Lebanon can export their gas through this pipeline to Egyptian LNG plants to be liquified.

Russia , USA and European union have invested in these projects and support Egypt to become this region energy hub.

The problem is between Turkey and Cyprus ( EU) + USA ( X-Mobil ) over one economic zone # 6 it has nothing to do with Egypt and other countries.

Turkey is in no position to go to war with Nato and no one will support Turkey, they will be on their own.
Turkey will have to take bitter pill and forget about this region since no one there wants to deal with Turkey.

Turkey said its words and pushing it so none of your supar puper army can come close to challenge it...
The problem is, every year Turkey will become way more stronger in Navy and those gas projects take at least 10 years to actually start the transfer. Egypt has zero chance and they just use it for internal politics..

Your ignorance will make people laugh about you here , Egypt already has a highly developed gas infrastructure. Cyprus and Israel will export through already existing pipelines connected to their fields from Egypt . Egypt has 2 LNG plants with annual capacity 25 Billion cubic meter for exporting gas .
The other point you forgot clown is that Egypt has a large petrochemical industry that can utilize all of cyprus and israel gas as a feeding stock.

Israel already signed a deal with a private Egyptian company for 15 billion dollars and Cyprus will follow soon while you will be sitting here barking all day long .

Go liberate your occupied lands from Armenia clown .

.
There are also Oil pipelines coming to Egypt, fro Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.. now talk about a major energy hub..This is a very ambitious project that has already started.. The US estimates the Gas reserves of the Nile-delta alone to be around 223 trillion cf.. now add the Mediterranean gas still to be explored, and the red sea explorations for Gas and Oil..all with promising preliminary studies..

You are right, but, if we find our own gas too no one can take it from Cyprus too, but that has nothing to do with this deal.

Turkey acts while others talk. I would love to see the Egyptian mafia boss make a concrete move against Turkey because that will be the day of Afrin for him.

That's the EEZ zone of Turkish mainland according to international treaties !

That's the Greek claims that want us to accept like a joke !

Mahatir or whatever you are as “clown”, You will receive the response like How you speak !
You don’t have any idea about real incident/politic and history of this EEZ treaties, need to "bark" daily to satisfy your egos in forum pages but The calculations are done totally different in field. International treaties never favour one side so Noone can ignore the rights of Turkish sovereign in Mediterranean. Approach to Turkey's EEZ as third party latest hole of clarion in this problem and see What's the results of your ignorance instead of threatening Turkish Republic with your dirty mouth daily, While get angry Turks not to sacrifice own sea zones to a small island because Greek Cypriots and their partner Egypt accept it like that !
