Cruise missile to be tested next year
[ 12 Nov, 2006 1555hrs ISTPTI ]

NEW DELHI: Sagarika, India's first submarine-launched nuclear-capable cruise missile, will be ready for flight trials by early next year, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said.

The turbo-jet powered, vertically launched cruise missile with a range of 700 nautical miles and capable of delivering a 500-kg warhead, is being developed by DRDO with Israeli assistance. India is simultaneously seeking to rope in European missile firms for the project that is being kept under wraps.

The sources said the missile's first prototype, incorporating a solid fuel booster, should be ready for a test flight by early 2008.

At the same time, the DRDO is continuing the development of the submarine-launched version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile developed jointly with Russia.

The development of these two missiles, which will turn India into only the world's fifth power with such a capability, appears to be the silver lining in the country's missile programme that has been plagued by long delays and huge cost overruns.

Aggressive India has started the development of yet another naval cruise missile with the assistance of Isreal. The range of the cruise missile 700 miles, more than that of Babur cruise missile.

India is continuelly competing, and is scared by Pakistan and Chinese military developments.

You call India aggressive. And then say that such acts are in responce to Chinese and Pakistani military developments.

damn that Israeli help. This missile would probably work now!

North Korea, China anyone? Hanky-panky with Tomahawks? The AgniII failed twice but it was successfully tested finally. Same will probably happen to the AgniIII. It will be successful sooner or later. Israeli and Russian help will probably speed up development though.

Of course, of course.

Let's see what happens, Israelis never got their Indian specific weapons right either. Remember the Arrows?

Wonder what made them ditch the Brahmos? Couldn't get its range increased on their own? I thought JV were prevented on missile tech, going above 300km? That's why Brahmos has a puny range compared to the original Russian Yakhont.

The Arrow was a joint US-Israel project. What's India specific about it?
Who ditched the Brahmos? Tech transfers or sales are prohibited. I don't think JVs are.

The thousand km brahmos was to be made years ago... whatever happened to that?

Lemme be clear and unbiased ok?

Asim bro Brahmos Range is 300 kms due to MCTR regulations, but India doesnot comply with that, it has been discussed to death in best aviation forum like keypublishing that Brahmos with its size IS DEFINITELY MORE THAN 300 KMS.
Its a huge missile.

Ok now Back to Sagarika its 700 nautical Miles means 1500 kilometres.
Sagarika has 2 versions.

SLCM and SLBM.
We have no idea about the SLBM one.

but do you guys remember it was in news India getting TRD-50 engines from Russia with full TOT to power their Lakhshya UAV, russians said they will not let us use it on a cruise missile "they says so to blind US".

Now i firmly believe this SLCM Sagarika is based on TRD 50 engines.
ok how?
TRD 50 engines are used in Kh-55 Raduga Nato name Kent Cruise missile of Russia.
It has range of 1500 kms and 3000 kms with external fuelsage and payload of 500 kgs.

If you look closely Sagarika too has 1500 kms range "700 NM" and 500 kg payload...
now lets get back to tomahawk comparison.
conventional tomahawk has range of 1500 kms with 650 kg warhead
nuclear one has 125 kg warhead or so and range 2500 kms.

so a SLCM can be easily used as a SLBM with nuke payload.

now SLBM needs VLS equipped SSN, we dont have that that is why IIT has designed a prototype to test these missiles, when we will have SSN we will fit these.

Testing of Sagarika shows another thing we are very close of having a SSN.

SLCM cant be a true SLBM, and noone will help you to get SLBM.
A Agni 3 can me made SLBM with changes but that will require extensive Testing.

a 1500 kms of 700 nautical miles SLCM can pose aSERIOUS threat to whole PN fleet even Chinese fleet as mallaca straits...region is more like Iran gulf place.

1 nautical miles = 1.9 Kilometres.
so it will be around 1500 "roughly"

similar as Kh-55 Kent.

I believe we will also Test a SLBM but i dont know what will be its range.
Why? you can increase the range to 2500 kms by decreasing payload to 125 Kg, now if you want a true deterrance 125 kg is hardly enough.

You can use it as tactical nuke not as conventional SLBM.

So a SLBM will be either based on Prithvi III or Agni 3.

You call India aggressive. And then say that such acts are in responce to Chinese and Pakistani military developments.

Pakistani military developments are only for the "minimum detterence" and self defence only. India has much more weapons, and sometimes even better.

You must understand that India is threatened from two sides. And as far as military power goes the threat from our right side is HUGE.

So you guys want to have a military which can counter both sides? Correct?

Then you guys believe that China will not involve itself, if Pakistan is attacked by India.
