Srinagar, Dec 11: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer was killed and another paramilitary personnel injured when suspected militant opened fire on their patrol at Nowgam Bypass here Wednesday afternoon.
Reports said suspected militants opened fire on a CRPF patrol party at Pahru Chowk in Nowgam at around 4 p.m. Assistant Sub-Inspector Uday Narayan and Constable Surender Roy of 29 Battalion were injured in the firing. Though both were rushed to Army’s 92-Base Hospital at Badamibagh Cantonment here for treatment, the ASI succumbed to his injures on the way.
Public Relations Officer, CRPF, Kishore Prasad told Greater Kashmir that circumstantial evidence reveals that militants had some mode of travelling at the time of attack. “Some eyewitnesses told us that militants were travelling in a Santro car. They were three in number,” Kishore said, adding that militants fired with AK 47 Rifle. “They managed their escape. We have recovered the (empty) cartridges,” he said.
Components of Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of JKP and CRPF cordoned the area soon after the incident. “We carried out searches but did not find anything,” a police official said.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Abdul Ghani Mir told Greater Kashmir that police were investigating. “Initial investigations reveal that one militant has opened fire on CRPF patrol,” he said adding that police were ascertaining the group involved in the attack.
The attack created panic in the area and people ran to safer places. Traffic on the highway remained suspended for at least an hour.
Soon after the attack, forces were seen carrying out checking of vehicles across the city.
This is the second militant attack in Kashmir in less than a fortnight. On December 2, suspected militants shot dead SHO Chadoora in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
The Bypass has witnessed some high profile attacks this year. In March, two militants and five CRPF personnel died in a fidayeen attack in Bemina area. On June 25, militants killed eight Army soldiers and wounded 16 as they ambushed a convoy at Hyderpora a day before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited J&K.
