Indian Air Forces MiG aircraft has always been surrounded by controversy and the latest being a Wing Commander filing a petition in the court demanding scrapping of the MiG-21 fighter jets. The petition has been filed in the backdrop of the number of crashes of MiG-21. Speaking with CNN-IBNs Karan Thapar, former IAF chief AY Tipnis said crashes are bound to happen because of the way the aircraft are handled.
Tipnis said the accidents have occurred for different reasons at different times. Certainly many years ago the accidents on MiG-21 were high, but today they have to be expected from an aircraft because of the way we are using it today and have been using it for the last 50 years, he added.
During the debate, Defence Analyst Uday Bhaskar said the material failure is a significant contributor to the failure of MiGs and each time its HAL and its quality control that has not been objectively reviewed. I think it is a cause for great concern that eight years down the line it takes a serving officer to move the court for the system to actually take notice of what has been staring in face for almost 10 years, he said.
Wing Commander Sanjeet Singh Kaila, survivor of a near fatal MiG-21 crash, has become the first pilot to move the court demanding scrapping of the MiG-21 fighter jets from the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Kaila has filed a petition at the Delhi High Court saying that flying a MiG-21 violated his right to work in a safe environment.
Kaila was injured in a MiG-21 crash in January 2005 while he was on a routine sortie from the Nal Air Base in Rajasthan. The crash left him with severe neck and spinal injuries rendering him unfit to fly. He said the crash was caused by poor workmanship at a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited facility.
