CPEC to create over 700,000 direct jobs: expert

KARACHI - The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is expected to create over 700,000 direct jobs between 2015 and 2030 and add 2 to 2.5 points to the annual economic growth of the country, says Prof Dr Samina Khalid, director of the Applied Economics Research Centre (AERC).

Dr Samina, delivering a lecture here on Sunday, said that private consortia under this initiative would build energy infrastructure worth $33 billion to overcome Pakistan's energy shortages.

One of the expected outcomes of the CPEC is expansion of the economy from $229 billion to $1.30 trillion by 2025, Dr Samina added. She said that project's priorities included transport and communications, energy infrastructure, industrial parks, special economic zones and people-to-people cooperation.

Dr Samina maintained that CPEC activities were expected to galvanise Pakistan's economy and propel it onto a higher growth trajectory by lowering transaction costs, improving productivity, encouraging research and development and spurring innovation.

Talking about the major outcomes of the CPEC, she said that some of the likely outcomes of this project include expansion of the economy from $229 billion to $1.30 trillion by 2025, increase in the per capita income up to $5,000 by 2025, increase in exports from current level of less than $25 billion to $150 billion by 2025 and increase in national savings up to 26 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) by terminal year.

Some important economic features of this project make it important for Pakistan that include reinforced investor confidence, GDP growth above seven per cent, accelerated economic activity led by the construction sector, overcoming energy deficiency, infrastructure development, employment opportunities in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, establishment of new special economic zones along the corridor. All provinces and regions will be equal beneficiaries of the project, she said.

I dont believe a word of what this lady says. It's impossible to increase the export from 25 to approx $ 150 bln in 8 years. You need to increase the export annually by $ 15,5 bln, and in order to increase the export you must have industry in the country do export something. We dont have any industry capable of that, and it takes time to build up factories and to train staff...

IMO, if we're somewehere btw $ 50-70 bln, that would be a landmark victory.

Figures aside, as long as Pakistan is improving and heading in the right direction (which it is) that's all that matters for now.

700,000 jobs over 15 years is over 46,000 jobs per year, or nearly 128 job every day being created. Wow! Perhaps she can enlighten us with the data, estimates and reasoning for calculating up such a number before we can believe it.

On second thought, why question such good news? It is all great news that should be celebrated without question.

700,000 is a huge number, people will be happy even if half that number gets jobs.
Pakistanis should squeeze every drop of money flowing through CPEC for the benefit of the people, never give any freebies to China, be a shrewd businessman.
Business is business, emotions should not come in between business.

I think the same news was published elsewhere as well cause I read this news couple of days ago and ignored it.

She is referring to Vision 2025 of Pakistan which is this piece of document

http://pc.gov.pk/vision2025/Pakistan Vision-2025.pdf

It talks about increasing regional connectivity and enhancing bilateral trades with neighbours... (such as you hear in the news about Iran to increase bilateral trade from less than 1 billion USD to 5 billion USD), Turkey, Afghanistan and Central Asia to achieve the export target of 150 billion dollars and similar number of import. The issue is, we can certainly increase the import volume to 150 billion USD but we cannot increase the exports over night due to lack of industrial output. I believe the document was prepared in 2014 and there has not been enough progress to increase exports since then.

Our commerce minister gives export target of 35 billion USD by next year and himself declares in the next meeting that its practically impossible to achieve that goal by next year. So the bottom line is, not everything will happen as projected and so much will remain on the wishlist.

Our GDP would require a miracle to touch 1.3 trillion USD within 10 years so I wouldn't even go to such detail. The bottom line is, even though the figures are hypothetical and contains little significance, the flaws identified and the solution to tackle them are very good so even though we will miss such indicators, the direction is right and only more stability will help us achieve some of the goals.

what a moronic post.

funds for CPEC comes from China herself.

you are like saying China should not be cheating/wasting her own money on CPEC.

.
As long as you dont start any s..t with India. Basically the success of CPEC is in our hands.

Sir 700,000 jobs are very low when you consider the nature of investment. Just a warehouse in Tilbury, UK has created 1500 direct jobs and 35,000 indirect jobs, more than 76,000 people work at London Heathrow Airport and has created more than million indirect jobs around the airport.

I am not obviously comparing London with Pakistan and obviously when a shopping centre in London creates 20,000 - 30,000 jobs, we don't have an infrastructure and middle class sector to absorb such an immense amount of investment over a mere shopping centre. The point is

The Government of Pakistan has give conservative figure of 0.7 million as many economics predicts indirect jobs over 2 million. We are currently building an Airport, sea port, industrial parks, warehouses, hospitals, technical institutes, over 3000 kilometres of Highways, 1800km of railways, 34 billion dollars of power projects, developing thar coal, infrastructure of railways in thar desert, water purification plants, hydro power projects and so on so forth.

I am sure if you start adding people the number of people directly involved will work out to be in hundreds of thousands
