Balochistan Governor Amanullah Khan Yasinzai said the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a game changer and will bring Economic Development to Pakistan, particularly to the Province.

Political representatives said on Friday that the projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will bring peace, prosperity and development in Pakistan’s Southwest Balochistan Province.

The webinar, convened by prominent Islamabad-based think tank the Emerging Policymakers’ Institute, was attended by the representatives of Balochistan’s mainstream political parties, the Chinese ambassador and Chinese companies undertaking development projects in the province.

Speaking at the Video Conference Event, Balochistan Governor Amanullah Khan Yasinzai termed the multi-billion-dollar project a game changer for the entire region which he said would bring economic development in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing said CPEC will change the fortune of the province while highlighting the importance of Balochistan to Pakistan.

Many projects under CPEC are under construction and the Pakistani people will reap the benefits in years to come, Yao said, adding that China and Pakistan have a close friendship and China will stand besides Pakistan through thick and thin.

The Political Parties representatives reiterated their commitment to making CPEC a success and pledged to expand the role of Balochistan and increase opportunities for the province in CPEC.

The Participants also appreciated the responsible role that China has been playing in combating COVID-19 at home and abroad, and thanked the Chinese government for the help it has extended to Pakistan to fight against the Pandemic.

CPEC is an overarching term, it comes across as a singular project with directly quantifiable benefits that can be calculated year on year.
It is a bit more complicated, the history has to be kept in mind if you wish to know the truth otherwise you only get a muddled story.

You have to remember that the war on terror started 20 years ago and 15 years before CPEC projects started, no one was investing in Pakistan, many businessmen had their meetings abroad, some embassies operated their visa sections from the gulf countries, Pakistan went through a lot.

But, everyone forgets that before this war on terror, Pakistan was dealing with a local war on terror because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Then the civil war there during the 1990s, during all this, a lot of weapons and drugs were smuggled into Pakistan. Iran and Saudi Arabia flaming sectarianism in the country, bringing their Sunni vs Shia fight to Pakistan, plus the Soviets and India financing terror activities in the country. Between 3 to 5 million Afghan refugees who are still there, and during those decades Pakistan had taken in more refugees from other countries such as Somalia, Bosnia, Chechnya, Burma and few others numbering in hundreds of thousands, I could go on.

The point being the economic situation Pakistan found itself before CPEC had been building up for decades, because of the situation in which Pakistan found itself. Pakistan never claims to be a rich country, they recognise they are a developing country, and that's a lot issue to handle for a developing country. I forgot to mention American and the Saudis funded for the training of nearly 200,000 mujahideen's and when the Soviet invasion was over in 1989, all the foreign countries packed up and left, left Pakistan to deal with the mess they had financed, PLUS America and some of the other countries put heavy sanctions on Pakistan.

On the backdrop of this, CPEC changed the narrative for Pakistan, it was no longer about the war on terror and this issue or that issue, but economic development. The mindset globally started to change and more importantly, the mindset locally started to change, where people had known nothing but terrorism started to see a new and a better future. THAT means a lot, and it is not quantifiable.

Pakistan had massive load-shedding problems, blackouts etc, that has massively reduced, the country's infrastructure has improved immensely, search motorways in Pakistan and you will find out, the cities are planning better, its the knock-on effects. Pakistan discovered one the largest coal reserves in the world in the early 1990s, because no one wanted to invest and those who did wanted extremely favourable terms, those resrves were never developed, now they are producing thousands of megawatts of electricty from local coal, again, I really could go on but the point is to give you an idea of the change or benefits.

Plus, CPEC is designed to work in phases, the next phase relates to agricultre and industry, this should bring in employment, technology and development of industry and local capacity and depending on the nature of the industries that take hold should result in reduced imports and increased exports. Thereafter another phase will start, the start of each phase obviously depends on the performance of the previous phase, because it is being implemented according to a plan. during the 1960s Pakistan was presented as a tiger economy, a model of development for other developing countries by the world bank, we did that by ourselves, Pakistan and Paskiatnis want to get back to those days.

After a long time, they are starting to believe that they can.

ok in general the true impact of all this development will in seen in the next 10 to 20 years... the economy currently is under going restructuring so it taking longer than normal.

Rest assured these investments are necessary .. no body is a fool to sign off billion $ projects. You indians dont like it because this will make finally stand on it own feet.

from the report i saw ...around 2%+ of GDP expected on top of current growth rate once projects are completed and a progressive 0.5% to 1% more as the cumulative effect population and industry growth over the years

so the multiplier effect will grow over time

One thing always puzzled me, why Pakistan Steel Mill is not included in CPEC. This massive investment in Infrastructure requires huge quantity of steel. Why are you importing steel ? Steel Mill should have been included in very first phase.
This could also have created a manufacturing ecosystem around steel mill.
