DAWN.COM | Provinces | Khan of Kalat raises the stakes

QUETTA: The Khan of Kalat, Mir Suleman Dawood, announced on Tuesday formation of a council for ‘independent Balochistan’ and rejected any reconciliation with the government of Pakistan without the mediation of European Union and United Nations.

Addressing reporters from London on telephone, he said the council would ensure the creation of an independent state of Balochistan.

The Khan said Baloch separatist forces of Pakistan and Iran would have representation in the council.

He said the names of members of the council would be announced later.

He, however, said that Nawabzada Baramdagh Bugti will be a member of the council, adding that he was in touch with him and other forces which stood for an independent Balochistan.

Replying to a question, he said that recommendations adopted at the Kalat Jirga had not been shelved.

He said that a lot of progress had since been made and the issue of Balochistan had been raised at the international level. He said that some people had disassociated themselves from the recommendations.

He said he was enjoying the support of ‘friendly’ and ‘like-minded’ countries who had promised all help and cooperation.

The Khan of Kalat said the Baloch had observed their Independence Day on Tuesday because the British rulers had accepted independent and autonomous status of the Kalat state on August 11, 1947. They later announced independence of Pakistan and India on August 14 and 15.

He said the Qauid-i-Azam had negotiated Kalat’s accession to Pakistan but it was rejected by the Kalat state assembly.

He said Kalat was merged into Pakistan in March 1948 and in reaction Prince Agha Abdul Karim mounted a revolt.

The Khan said the Baloch had lost trust in Pakistani rulers.

However, he said that if European Union and United Nations mediated then negotiations could be held with the government of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Khuzdar Engineering University was closed on Tuesday for an indefinite period.

According to sources, a group of students belonging to the Baloch Students Organisation-Azad entered the university campus and tried to hoist the flag of ‘independent Balochistan’ on the administration building.

Law-enforcement personnel did not allow them to remove the national flag and arrested a number of students.

After the incident, the administration announced the closure of the university.

i would like to know the opinion of members from balochistan on this new development.

congrats, Pakistan! this is just the beginning...

In my opinion, we need to solve their problems if any. After all they are Pakistanis. If they still think they need to make Balochistan an independent state...then.. Well, that is not going to happen.

We can then just make them quiet, and start funding for Asam and the other 20 wanna be states in India.

who is The Khan of Kalat, Mir Suleman Dawood? do they(people of balochistan) support him?

We all know who these like minded countries are. Balouchi brothers are as patriotic Pakistanies as anyone else in Pakistan.

There genuine concerns should be addressed and resolved . BUt these sardars are only concerned about the money they used to get from the GOP.

For any misery of our balouchi bros. these sardars are equally responsible as they dont allow to develop there areas, especially they dont allow their fellow tribesmen to go to schools.

They know that by keeping them illeterate this is the only way they can rule them.

Look at the the Nawabzada Bugti he graduated from Oxford but none of his followers were allowed to goto the university.

I had a class fellow in Karachi university who was bugti and as per him his father had to put his head in Nawabzada bugti's feet in order to get a permissionto continue his studies at university level and that was also with a promise that he will go back and serve bugti.

I dunno where he is now but I praythat he would be alive and enjoying his life.

All these sardars more or less same. India did the right thing after getting independence they took all the land back from the nawabs or maharajas but we could not do anything and now this has become a serious problem with all these landlords. :coffee:

We must clap for India in this. Probably the greatest thing India has done for itself.

You tried to help some annabees in Punjab....Khalistan...but failesd miserably....remember.

You are still struggling with another one in Kashmir.....how many failures is Pakistan willing to create...
Are you trying to create a world record...in being called a failure...in everything you put your hands into.

Eliminate Sardars and end Sardari system once and for all HOWEVER at the same time resolve the issues normal Balochi people are suffering.

Ask your Army how of a "failure" we are in Kashmir. Kashmir will get its freedom. The day is coming.

Now lets stick to the topic.

Sir with all due respect, you dragged India into discussion even though it was not explicitly written. Then you went a step ahead and appreciated cause for assam help.

He said he was enjoying the support of ‘friendly’ and ‘like-minded’ countries who had promised all help and cooperation.

Note the word COUNTRIES. It might be saudi, Iran, US, even Israel etc

Quite frankly, pakistan has to stop its separatist struggle before breaking other countries.
