Six more passengers, including another American, have fallen ill on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that is quarantined off the coast of Japan, bringing the ship's total to 69 passengers who have been diagnosed with coronavirus.

The nationalities of the newly diagnosed passengers have not been revealed to Princess Cruises representatives, public relations director Negin Kamali told USA TODAY late Saturday.

The cruise ship is one of several affected by the deadly coronavirus outbreak, which has prompted cruise lines to issue quarantines and perform testings and screenings. Meanwhile, some ports are denying cruise ships entry for fear of the virus spreading.

The coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan, China, has spread across the globe with more than 34,963 confirmed cases and 725 deaths as of Saturday evening. The majority of the cases are in mainland China. Common signs of infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The first American has died in China, the U.S. embassy in Beijing reported Saturday morning.

According to an earlier count announced before the six new cases were brought to light, 12 passengers diagnosed with coronavirus were Americans, the cruise line said. The ship is under quarantine until Feb. 19.

The ship, which had been off the coast of Yokohoma, Japan, is out to sea for a 24-hour period to produce fresh water.

Yokohama, Japan (Feb 4, 2020 GMT+9)

Princess Cruises has confirmed the turnaround of Diamond Princess has been delayed for approximately 24 hours to allow Japan public health authorities the opportunity to review the health status of all guests and crew on board.

On the previous voyage, a guest from Hong Kong, embarked in Yokohama on January 20, sailed one segment of the itinerary, and disembarked in Hong Kong on January 25. He visited a local Hong Kong hospital, six days after leaving the ship, where he later tested positive for coronavirus on February 1. While on the ship he did not visit the ship’s medical centre to report any symptoms or illness. The hospital reports that he is in stable condition and the family members traveling with him remain symptom-free.

The safety, security and well-being of all guests and crew is our absolute priority. The review of the arriving guests and crew, by Japanese health authorities, is standard practice after a guest tested positive for coronavirus and we are working closely with the local authorities to provide detailed records to facilitate their review.

Diamond Princess arrived in Yokohama early from a 14-day round trip itinerary, which departed from Yokohama (Tokyo) on January 20 and was scheduled to return on February 4. There are 2,666 guests and 1,045 crew on board.

Coronavirus infection tally on Diamond Princess hits 136 as tests for all passengers eyed

Halfway through a two-week quarantine, 66 more people aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Yokohama have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the tally to 136 with only a fraction of the passengers tested, Princess Cruise Lines said Monday.

This means there are now more than 150 confirmed cases in Japan, if the 136 from the Diamond Princess are included.

The ship was put under quarantine soon after its return on Feb. 3 after a passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong was confirmed to have the pneumonia-causing virus.

The government is now preparing to test dozens of elderly passengers as it investigates potential issues with hygiene control on the infected ship.

But Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga indicated during a news conference Monday afternoon that it would be difficult to test all of the passengers and crew, adding that testing will be prioritized for people with potential symptoms and the elderly.

Earlier in the day, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry had said it was considering testing all of the now roughly 3,600 people aboard when the two-week quarantine ends on Feb. 19. Once their results are clear, they would be permitted to disembark.

No timeline was given for the process.

The ministry had said earlier that disembarkation might be possible on Feb. 19 but the passengers would have to wait for results.

“We need to properly address the unease and concerns of our citizens,” health minister Katsunobu Kato said.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Monday that it might be difficult to test everyone aboard the ship.

Only 336 passengers had been tested as of Monday, according to the health ministry.

The overall tally for confirmed cases includes 10 Japanese who were evacuated from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, on government-chartered flights, and 16 others, including tourists, tour guides and a bus driver.

The government has supplied requested medication to around 750 of the some 1,850 passengers who had made such requests as of Sunday and is working to supply the rest.

The Diamond Princess departed Yokohama on Jan. 20 and returned on Feb. 3 after visiting Kagoshima, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Taiwan and Okinawa. Passengers who were confirmed as infected upon arrival have been hospitalized in Japan.

U.S. company Princess Cruise Lines Ltd., which runs the Diamond Princess, said Monday that it will fully refund all passengers who were unable to disembark at Yokohama because of the outbreak.

The refund will include the cost of the cruise, hotel accommodations prior to and following the cruise, on-shore excursions and services used aboard the ship.

Passengers who were taken to medical facilities after testing positive for the virus or who were hospitalized for other reasons, will also be eligible.

The company will also cover all costs incurred by those quarantined since last Tuesday. The passengers were originally scheduled to disembark at Yokohama.

The cost of staterooms for the 16-day cruise ranged from ¥295,000 to ¥478,000, depending on type and inclusion of a balcony, according to the company. Suites ranged from ¥1.08 million to ¥1.38 million.

The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry said Monday that 13 of the 14 foreign cruise lines that were scheduled to dock in Japan this month have canceled their Japan stopovers.

The remaining cruise ship, the U.S.-operated Ocean Dream, is set to dock at Yokohama on Saturday and Kobe on Sunday.

At the beginning, there was only one Hong Kong patient. Now, however, there are at least more than 100 patients.

I can't imagine how many people would have been infected if the tourists on this ship had not been banned from entering Japan.

I think this is more like a experiment to test how quickly this virus spreads. Based on this, I am guessing number of infected outside China has to be significantly higher than what is being reported. Also there seems to be a long latency before the disease kills you so the mortality rate outside China will also rise in the coming days/weeks.

The cruise ships are perfect for a virus to spread.

This all started when a Chinese Passenger board the ship and lie on the declaration form and saying he was not in Wuhan or any high risk area before. And then basically it spread from there like a wild fire.

And people wonder why the Chinese are catching flak on these issue.

Typical selfish personality trait I've seen from so many Mainland Chinese. No social responsibility, no consideration for others, always ME ME ME. It's like dealing with a 6 year old.

This isolated cruise ship is the perfect model. Chinese cannot fudge these numbers.
