What's new

Construction of warship for Pakistan underway

Basically, Type 055 DDG is bigger, faster, and more stealth, and has more radars and VLS units, better ASW and land-attack ability.
So its a comprehensive update to 052D but expensive to acquire for PN. In that case acquiring used 052B/C (older versions) with some updates, would be cost effective solution as @HRK suggested.

. . .
- but approximately 1+ billion $ (or above) for a single Type-55 DDG why not go for 2 or 3 in the same budget .... ???
this will not only swell the number of surface fleet which we lack but would close the gap against the IN in terms of capabilities, on the other hand a single Type-55 DDG would not be helpful for us

- Type-55 destroyer is fulfilling a particular niche in Chinese navy who have a huge area of responsibility and Area of Interests in different naval regions, but we do not have such requirements as our naval responsibility are limited

- China can afford type-55 as Chinese Navy not only have numbers in her favour but have budget to finance such warships but we could not afford such "luxury"

This was going to be my question too. Is it not logical to go for a DDG vessel as a next logical step in strengthening the navy? what is better 52 or 55 DDG?

In fact, Pakistan should consider Type 052D DDG. It shares the common VLS with Type 055 DDG, and that is very important!

It can launch China's a new generation of missiles.
IMO China and Pakistan should work on a Standard Missile-like SAM, i.e. a long-range SAM that can fit onto the Type 054A and 054AP. This way, both fleets can upgrade their 054A/AP frigates with LR-SAM capability; for PLAN, this means exponentially improving its main fleet, and for PN, adding new capabilities without new ships.

The sIze of VLS units of Type 054A is too small to a long-range SAM.

Besides, China also has to consider to launch other big missiles from the same VLS.

though Chinese term Type-55 as destroyer but it seems terming it as Cruiser would not be wrong. Type-52 D is also a destroyer but again would not be needed in PN for at least next 5-7 years as we are currently focusing the at frigate and corvette segment for PN, after completion of the current phase we would be required warships in class of destroyer to provide fleet wide air defence in this case
- Type-52D could be an option but again an expensive option as it cost around +500 million $ per warship
- Secondly China has plan to induct over two dozen ships of this class but currently only half number of this ship are constructed so the first priority would be given to Chinese Navy after that we may have some chance
- Therefore I believe our strategy to increase the numbers of frigates by inducting Type-54 and upcoming Jinnah class seem right
- After that we may augment PN fleet by opting second hand destroyers with available upgrades of that time from China, for this type-52B or C could prove to be an effective option in terms of cost and capabilities.

Finally Pakistan navy will surpass Indian coast guards :laughcry:
thats strange we are buying 4 Chinese ships and 4 is the exact number of Chinese ships which prevent entire indian navy to invade Maldives .:enjoy:

This was very bad joke areesh babu.
joke ?
.
since when world start using word joke instead of fact or reality?

The warship will be equipped with modern detection and weapon systems.

China has started building for Pakistan, its "all-weather ally", one of its "most advanced" naval warships as part of a defence agreement to maintain a "balance of power" in the Indian Ocean, the media reported on Wednesday.

The China Daily quoted China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) - one of the largest state-owned defence contractor - as saying that the construction of the ship has started in the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai and it is a version of China's most advanced guided missile frigate, without specifying its type.

The warship will be equipped with modern detection and weapon systems and will be capable of anti-ship, anti-submarine and air-defence operations, the CSSC said.

According to the Pakistani Navy, the ship's class is Type 054AP, which means it is based on the Type 054A of the People's Liberation Army Navy. It previously said four such ships have been ordered, according to the report.

Once constructed, the warship "will be one of the largest and technologically advanced platforms of Pakistan's Navy and strengthen the country's capability to respond to future challenges, maintain peace and stability and the balance of power in the region", the report said.

It will also support the Pakistani Navy's initiative of securing sea lanes for international shipping by patrolling distant waters, the CSSC said.

According to the report, Type 054A was the best frigate in service with the PLA Navy. It cited military sources as saying that the ship had a fully loaded displacement of about 4,000 metric tonnes and was equipped with advanced radars and missiles.

About 30 Type 054As are in service with the PLA Navy, observers said.

An insider in China's shipbuilding sector with knowledge of the Type 054AP programme told the China Daily that the ship is the largest and most powerful combat vessel China ever exported.

"Based on pictures circulating on the Internet, the ship will have vertical launch cells that can fire Chinese HQ-16 air-defence missiles and other kinds of missiles. Vertical launch cells will bring flexibility to the user in terms of weapons portfolio, thus giving it a stronger fighting capability," he said.

"The Type 054AP is the best frigate Pakistan can access in the international market," said the report, citing the insider.

"The service of Type 054APs will double the combat power of the Pakistani Navy's surface fleet," he added.

Well put, people must think of the cost implications as maintenance of ships is a very expensive affair. The natural thing to do will be another follow up order of four Type54's.

I would rather built them at slow pace at home..the milgem update /jinnah class rather than going for type54
