NEW DELHI: Congress has directed partymen to take to social media on a war footing, stressing it as an important tool to connect to a vast number of people.

Party spokespersons across states will now have to mandatorily open accounts on Twitter, the micro blogging site that has emerged as the top theatre of political clashes. Rahul Gandhi stressed on the importance of social media.

At a workshop of state leaders on Monday, Congress strategists sought to know how many of those in the gathering had Twitter and Facebook accounts, mobile phones and were familiar with SMS. When some replied in the negative to Twitter, they were asked to log on fast.

The new medium has emerged as a key focus in Congress's poll preparations with extra effort being put in to catch up with rival BJP, realizing it could no longer be dismissed as the activity of urban youth. The fact that it is being used as a force multiplier by shrewd politicians has added to the urgency in Congress ranks.

The ruling party recently created a new cell under MP Deepender Hooda to boost in-house capabilities on virtual networking sites.

The focus stayed on social media with Hooda briefing on the use of new tools to the gathered spokespersons and leaders from states.

Gujarat chief minister and BJP campaign committee chief Narendra Modi came in for attack that showed that Congress had assumed him as its principal challenger even though BJP has not declared him its PM candidate.

Congress leaders said Modi was fudging on social media to boost his image. The IT team that briefed the leaders said Rajkot and Surat had emerged as cities with high "hits" for Modi, which showed he had engaged professionals to rig social media to boost his image.

The team noted that while 'Gangnam' and 'Kolaveri' were popular across the world, Modi's hits were mostly from the two Gujarati cities.

Union minister Anand Sharma spoke about the achievements of UPA-2 and even some states to dismiss the claims made about Gujarat as propaganda.

A presentation by Gujarat state Congress chief Arjun Modwadia ended the day's proceedings, leaving little doubt among participants about the reason. Modwadia focused on claiming how Modi was lying about his development record and how the reality in the state, including industrialization, was dismal. He also spoke about fake encounters.

Looks like we already have quite a few of them e-Nrega chaps on this forum.
