Congress leader VC Shukla 'critically injured' in Maoist ambush, one killed

RAIPUR: Senior Congress leader Mahendra Karma has been killed when a group of Naxalites ambushed a convoy of senior Congress leaders at Darbha Ghat section on Jagdalpur-Sukma highway in tribal Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.

Unconfirmed reports said that a former Congress legislator Uday Mudaliyar was also killed in the ambush while senior Congress leader and former Union minister VC Shukla, Sukma's Congress legislator Kawasai Lakma were among the critically injured. There is no confirmation about reports that Chhattisgarh state Congress president Nanndkumar Patel and his close family members were missing and were probably abducted by the rebels.

"Karmaji is no more. We don't have any more details", Karma's close family members told TOI over telephone. However, police and civil officials neither confirmed nor denied reports about heavy causalities in the Maoist ambush.

Senior Congress leaders were on their way to Keshloor from Sukma after attending a parivartan yatra meeting at Sukma when a group of about 150 armed Maoists resorted indiscriminate firing and triggered a powerful blast targeting their convoy. Preliminary reports said a local Congress leader Gopi Madwani was killed.

"We are waiting for confirmation about these reports. I don't have any details", state Congress media cell in charge Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said.

An official spokesman said chief minister Raman Singh has cancelled his Vikas Yatra and is returning to the state capital where he is expected to hold a high level meeting to take stock of the situation.

Unconfirmed reports said Karma, who was prominently known as Bastar tiger, was initially kidnapped for identification and then they pumped 20 bullets after beating him on his head with the gun's butt. There was a cross firing between Karma's guards and Naxalites but when the guards ran out of bullets, Karma surrendered along with few other Congress leaders.

Former MLA Konta, Kawasi Lakhma is said to be safe and admitted to the hospital. He got injured during the firing when the glass of his vehicle's windowpane broke down.

Karma, who had spearheaded the controversial anti-Naxalite movement Salwa Judum which began in June 2005, was already on the Maoist hit list and he had survived several attempts on his life. It is said that more than 150 Naxalites were there firing indiscriminately.

We just got hit, big time.

News reports state that nearly a 1000 naxal fighters moved in under the cover of dense foliage and attacked the convoy.

From what I have gathered:-

1) While the convoy was well protected there was no reconnoitering done, which is standard procedure even when lesser functionaries visit the area.

2) The CAPF personnel were curiously absent.

3) Severe intelligence failure on the part of the state agencies and the police.

From my father's brief, he has served in the Sukma area extensively:-

When he was there it was yet to be demarcated as a separate district proper, it was treated as a "block". During his tenure there he observed the CAPFs trying to use hepters for aerial surveillance but the dense foliage rendered any such action futile. Densely forested area with the only one serviceable main road..easy target in the past and difficult to monitor. Population of the area is around 1.2-1.5 lakh tops.

@Dilinger:25 people mostly Congress Workers are dead acc. to Home ministry.
There were 150-200 Naxals not 1000-1200.

Yaara on the ground..rear parties of 200 each numbering 3-4 have been recently spotted..we were just in contact with area administration. The naxals always operate like this..with a vanguard and rear parties..they have been careful with this.

I cannot yet find out how many people were actually taking the shots..but they are in that area and now is the chance to apprehend them..the trigger pullers as well as their rear guards.

This is Very Good . Since now Congress's very owned are killed , they might launch a operation to wipe this maoist menace completely .

No one in govt cares about Dead CRPF and BSF people .

I have to agree- this will make politicians across the country sit up and take notice. Many will be compltly unaware of what is going on in this part of India and will now push for harder action against them- the Moaists were already on the run and now this could very well be the final nail in their coffins.

Congress will use this for getting Sympathy for vote bank ...

Nothing Changes for Congress untill The Top Family Aka Gandi Parivar is hurt or killed ...

Congress leader Mahendra Karma killed in alleged Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Mahendra Karma has been killed in an alleged Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh. State Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel and his son have been kidnapped. Party leader and former union minister VC Shukla has also been injured in the attack that took place during Congress' 'Parivartan Yatra' in Dharba Valley.

Several policemen are also feared dead
.

Mr Karma was a local tribal leader, who spearheaded the controversial anti-Naxalite movement - 'Salwa Judum'. The leader, who has been a state minister in the Ajit Jogi government, had Z-plus security after several attacks by Maoists in the past.

According to reports, a land mine blast took place near the Congress convoy, which was followed by heavy firing.

Congress had launched Parivartan Yatra on April 12 in the state where assembly elections are due later this year.

Condemning the incident, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said it is an 'attack on democratic values'. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has spoken to Chief Minister Raman Singh and has offered him necessary aid from the Centre.

@WarMonger They left small pit fires to "inflate" their numbers..still no concrete info on the no. of shooters in the actual action team..but estimate for total presence including their scouts and van guard is now being set at 400+, these are still first responder reports which are not corroborated.

Anyone got more concrete info @ALL?

Initial reports of number of Maoists are always inflated.
During the 2010 Chintalnar Ambush initial reports said there were 1000+ Maoists involved.
But later it was reduced to 300.

It is really a failure of state govt to provide adequate security, cant blame CRPF they themselves dont know much about the area. What is state police and intelligence dept doing..
1000 maoist is an impossible figure.

We are shocked, astounded and pained by the attack on our colleagues in Chhattisgarh: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

what about those security personals who died?? if this ****** stayed in power it will take our country into stone ages.

CNN IBN shows, PM offers additional force...

This is not WE vs THEM issue.

It's about US.

No matter who got killed, injured, etc.

The fact is Naxals are menace to our country.

& GOI can't be blame solely.

Since naxals know no state borders, they have built a Long red corridor in our eastern states.

But since law & order is a state subject, we need cooperation b/w different states to deal with this menace.

But due to EGO issue b/w Politicians/Govt. of all parties, CO-OPERATION IN THE OPERATION AGAINST NAXALS hardly takes place.

Instead of Uniting & Fighting Naxals, we are fighting with each other.

+ Naxals aren't terrorists, it's a more of a SOCIAL problem which needs to be addressed ASAP.
