Pakistan on Thursday announced that it will not host next month’s Commonwealth Parliamentary Union meeting amid a row with India over its refusal to invite the speaker of Jammu & Kashmir assembly for the conference.

India had threatened to boycott the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference to be held here from September 30 to October 8 after Islamabad refused to invite Jammu & Kashmir assembly speaker Kavinder Gupta for the event. The conference was to bring together speakers of Commonwealth nations in Islamabad.

“We have clarified to the London Secretariat of the Commonwealth that Kashmir is a disputed territory and now it is impossible for the Commonwealth Conference to be held in Pakistan,” National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq told reporters.

He said the event will now be held in New York.

“A detailed letter will be written to the CPA countries over the Kashmir dispute and the Kashmir issue will be raised on every forum of the Commonwealth,” Sadiq said.

He said the Kashmir issue could not be overlooked at any cost and the assembly speaker would not be invited.”The decision to hold the event in Pakistan was made on the basis that the Kashmir assembly speaker would not be invited to the Conference,” he said.

India had threatened to boycott the meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan saying, “A meeting of Speakers of all states unanimously decided that India will boycott the meeting of the CPU if the Speaker of the Jammu & Kashmir assembly is not invited.”

India needs to get out of the Commonwealth altogether, what does it actually offer to India?

The post 9/11 world has no appetite for any militant islamist causes now anyway, we can humiliate them on Kashmir and terror in New York.

BC what nonsense is this speakers conference? Bloody waste of airfare. Commonwealth is good for networking only. Best to send some low key officials for such meetings, along with interested businessmen.

India seeks shifting of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference from Pakistan

New Delhi: Maintaining its strong stance, India has asked the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to shift the venue of CPA's annual conference from Islamabad, saying Pakistan has forfeited its right to host the meet by not inviting the Jammu & Kashmir branch which was in violation of the Association's constitution.

In a letter to CPA chairperson, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also called for immediate resolution matter and ensure invitation to the J&K Speaker, saying otherwise India will boycott the annual conference in Islamabad.

Referring to a meeting of the Speakers of all states on Friday, she said it was resolved to call upon the chairperson and CPA Executive Committee "to use her good offices to immediately resolve the matter" arising out of "unilateral" decision of Pakistan failing which CPA India region including the Union and State branches will boycott the event.

The letter said J&K Branch of CPA was in good financial standing with CPA and fulfils all conditions of its membership.

Conveying outcome of the meeting which was held last week, the Lok Sabha Speaker said the members felt Pakistan "forfeit" its right to host the 61st Conference for not inviting Jammu and Kashmir CPA branch in violation of Article 8 of the CPA constitution and that the venue of the conference be shifted to another country.

"I trust that as Chairperson of the Executive Committee, you would pursue the matter and ensure that the century old traditions of the Commonwealth are upheld," Mahajan said in the letter written on Saturday.

"The host Pakistan CPA branch has taken the unilateral decision not to extend invitation to Jammu and Kashmir CPA branch.

"This is not only in violation of the provisions of CPA Constitution, it is also against the principle that CPA is a membership organisation which has constitutionally been bound for over a century to invite all its member branches to the CPA annual conference so long as a branch is in good financial standing with the Association," she said in the letter.

Last Friday, India had decided to boycott the Commonwealth Parliamentary Union conference in Islamabad from 30 September to 8 October in protest against Pakistan not inviting the Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Invitations for the conference have been sent to all the other Assembly Speakers in India.

Pakistan was given a face saver by allowing them to announce the cancellation of the meeting.

Common wealth conference has no importance these days !

Nothing really.
This whole concept of Commonwealth nations is just a relic of British dominions and territories and doesn't serve any sort of purpose.
In today's world where relations between nations are based on far different realities and economic co-operation, IMHO remaining a member of Commonwealth is really dwelling in past.

But it must seem like an egg in the face while announcing it after all the Commonwealth Organisation mustn't have concurred with the Pak stand

They were trying to emulate what Big Brother China does on Arunachal .

Indian clout has evidently worked
