The Hindu : News / National : Coast Guard floats $200 million tender for 16 choppers

The Indian Coast Guard has floated a global tender worth over $200 million to procure 16 light helicopters to be deployed on its warships to prevent any 26/11-type attack.

“The global Request for Proposal (RFP) for procuring these choppers was issued a couple of months ago and companies have been asked to submit their bids by December,” a Defence Ministry official toldPTIin New Delhi.

The RFP has been sent to three companies — Eurocopter, AgustaWestland and Sikorsky, they said. Eurocopter is planning to field its twin-engine Panther helicopter.

According to the RFP, the Coast Guard wants these choppers to be equipped with surveillance devices to carry out search and rescue roles in coastal areas, they said.

The procurement is part of Coast Guard’s efforts to enhance its capabilities to tackle terrorism and other threats emanating from the sea.

Deployment of the choppers on offshore patrol vessels and other large-size ships of the Coast Guard will help in expanding its reach in the maritime zone to locate suspicious boats and other vessels, they said.

The choppers will also have light and medium machine guns on board.

To revamp the coastal security mechanism post 26/11, the government had sanctioned several fast-track acquisitions of equipment worth thousands of crores rupees, like fast attack craft, patrolling vessels, Dornier surveillance aircraft, helicopters and coastal radars.

Dhruv is not small enough to be used in a coast guard ship.....
And there are reports navy not so happy about the naval version as the rotors are too big....

i think "AS565 MB" is perfect for coast guards
AS565 MB:Naval search & rescue version of
the AS365 N3, currently in
production. The main missions of
this version are anti-surface vessel
warfare (ASuW), anti-submarine
warfare (ASW), search and rescue
(SAR), troop transport, logistic
support, and casualty evacuation
(CASEVAC)/ medical evacuation
(MEDEVAC). This version is fitted
with a quick- securing 'Harpoon'
deck securing device that allows it
to land on and take off from ships,
whatever the relative wind
direction. Offered with various
armaments, including cabin-
mounted 20mm cannon, AS 15 TT
anti-shipping missile, Mark 46
torpedo and Whitehead A.244 /S
torpedo.

Is this separate to the IGC's request to lease and then buy Medium helos for which S-70B and E-90 were in contention.

.
^^^
I also have the same question. Whats happening with that lease deal ? Also how only 16 choppers gonna help ICG guard our shore ? Its actually comedy. I think ICG should purchase 100 Dhruvs and a couple hundred HAL LUH after its ready.

American Sikorsky, Italian Agusta Westland and European Eurocopter are race to supply 16 light twin-engine choppers to the Indian Coast Guard for a USD 300 million tender.

"The RFP to procure these choppers was issued by the Coast guard in May this year and the bidders have been asked to submit their responses by the end of this year,” Coast Guard sources revealed to Defencenow.com.

The procurement is part of Coast Guard efforts to prevent any 26/11 type attack and was cleared during the February 2009 Cabinet Committee on Security meeting.

Agusta Westland is offering its AW 109; Eurocopter with Panther and Sikorsky with S-97 Raider will take part in the tender.

According to the RFP, the Coast Guard wants these choppers to be equipped with surveillance devices to carry out search and rescue roles in coastal areas, they said.

Deployment of the choppers on offshore patrol vessels and other large-size ships of the Coast Guard will help in expanding its reach in the maritime zone to locate suspicious boats and other vessels, they said.

The choppers will also have light and medium machine guns on board.
