General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) visited Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) Wah today. COAS was given detailed briefing on performance of various production units. The briefing focused on targets achieved, future projects, envisaged modernisation for cost effective and sustainable production and acquisition of modern technology in line with prevailing operational requirements of Pakistan Armed Forces. COAS was also apprised on POF endeavours for international ventures focusing on exports to contribute to national exchequer. COAS visited Display Lounge where newly developed defence products were showcased. Appreciating management & Staff of POF for their dedication to optimise the output, COAS termed POF a force behind the Armed Forces serving as backbone in defence of Pakistan. Technological up-gradation / modernization and indigenous development to attain self-reliance in defence production is vital to meet the challenges of future battlefield, COAS concluded.

When on earth we would stop experimenting with G3. So the video clearly indicates Pakistan trying to merge G3 and M4. For GOD sake now stop please stop.

G-3S is the one with collapsible stock.

With the kind of huge sized production plant and supporting elements they have,they probably need a designer only.

Even that mutant isn't given to a single unit for trials. Pretty much sums the trust on new products of POF.

Army trials a "DESIGN",they don't trial cosmetic changes made to existing design.

G3 with enhanced stock and compensator.

A rifle which is built on H&K unit and looks inbetween G3 and AR,has got an AR like charging handle and may have been a piston or di,multi lug system.

The AR platform is a 50 year old design that is still being upgraded and enhanced, its not what entered service 50 years ago. The AK is a 70 year old design that is still being improved upon. go to the kalashnikov youtube channel if you don't believe me Hazrat.

so lets drop the flawed argument that its old and it cannot be improved upon. when AR and AK are the prime examples.

What are the components of a gun? Things like, muzzle, barrel, firing mechanism etc. All of these have patents on them. You can't just start producing them. With G3, you have a license for mass production. If you can get the IP rights you can then start innovating yourself and creating new IP that you can patent. That process will look exactly like what is happening here - trying out various mods to G3 and testing them. Want better metallurgy? Apply it to the platform you already have. Want better ergonomics? Apply it to the platform you already have.

There are other issues as well. You have hundreds of thousands of G3s already out there. You can't just throw all of them away. A step-wise upgrade means a lot of compatibility with older versions. And possibly even an upgrade path for old weapons.

I advise you to actually read up on IP laws. Here is an eye opener for you. Imagine you are born in some desert where you had no human interaction. Because of pure genius you end up designing the M4. Now you take this design and try to sell it. You will come up against IP laws. If someone has obtained a patent on a design, no one else can make a similar design and sell it. You need to create something completely different.

So you are telling me that you want POF to design something that has not been thought of by the Russians, the Germans, the Americans, the Czechs? In order for POF to invest in any design, that design has to be financially viable. It is not about simply churning out guns for Pakistan Armed Forces. You need money to do anything, and you earn money through exports. Even if you don't export, if any country realizes you are stealing their IP at a national level, they will tighten your screws in international bodies.
