CM Punjab resisting rangers operation against terrorism in Punajb says "police can handle terrorism"​

ISLAMABAD: The ruling party is still considering whether it should deploy Rangers in Punjab, as in Sindh, to carry out an operation against hardcore criminals and banned outfits based in the southern districts of the province.

The military establishment, in its assessment, sources in the provincial capital Lahore as well as the federal capital say, has recommended a Rangers-led operation in Punjab.

The issue came up for discussion first at the provincial apex committee meeting and has now landed before the Prime Minister’s Office. The security establishment thinks that Punjab police lack the training and the equipment to face terrorists, sources say, which was why the assignment must be handed over to Rangers.

However, the Shahbaz Sharif-led provincial government is of the view that it can handle the task through its Counter-Terrorism Department and the Elite Force, but this would require special weaponry and support from the military.

The provincial authorities are of the view that if provided with the proper equipment, the Elite Force could deliver the required results.

At the high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday, which was also attended by the Punjab CM and the Lahore corps commander, it was suggested by the army leadership that Rangers could be used for an operation in the province if the government wanted.

Talking to Dawn, a PML-N office-bearer close to the prime minister said that the districts where an operation could be planned include Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur and D.G. Khan. These districts are known for being home to and breeding grounds for militants and banned organisations.

Sources in the ruling party said the Punjab government would try its best to make do with its own Elite Force instead of calling in the Rangers. This, he said, would reflect poorly on the provincial government. Of course, he said, if Rangers come to Punjab, they will have the same powers they were exercising in Karachi.

“The prevailing security situation in Punjab was discussed during Wednesday’s meeting and now the decision lies with the PM; whether to seek assistance from Rangers in Punjab or not,” another source privy to the meeting told Dawn. The military establishment believed that to take the National Action Plan to its logical conclusion, Rangers should be used in the province, he said.


Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah was not available for comment, despite repeated attempts.

Another one with propaganda!!!!!! Did the SAME DAWN wrote an article that how much $$$$ they received from the One Billion "buy media fund" IK and Taren paid to the yellow journalists in Pakistan???? I bet the answer is no

By the way, the reality is, the CM told the Rangers to INVOLVE the Elite Force!!!! Not that the Rangers can't do the Ops!! He wants to grow the local force's capability to do these ops too, not just always wait on the military for everything like IK and his buddies do!

The ground reality is that these extremists actually do form a chunk of PML-N vote bank and they don't want to loose that.

Punjab may not be perfect but at least progress of action, peace, and prosperity is way better than in Sindh, KPK, and Baluchistan.

While militants in Baluchistan are linked to ethnic clashes between Pukhtuns, Baloch and Hazaras, there is also a very serious separatist movement. Basically the people controlling these terrorist activities are living abroad and you can't do much.

In KPK, you have a party whose leader is dying to have peace talks with Taliban and even treats their patients in hospitals.

Sindh is pretty much everything in one shell. Ranging from Sindhi, Pukhtun, Baloch, Punjabi, Mohajir clashes to armed political parties, to foreign interference. The government sitting at the moment is saviour for every terrorist. They had allowed anyone to do extortion and take over economic institutions.

According to the latest stats published by both the Federal and Provincial Governments', Punjab leads all the Provinces in terms of crime whether its robberies, murders, kidnappings or rapes. to put it bluntly, Punjab lacks an effective Police Force to tackle all these problems because promotions are not based on merit, rather who is loyal to the political masters. I mean, just look at the IG Mushtaq Sukhera. The man cannot speak properly, cannot even form words properly, he is not even fit to be an SHO let alone an IG. This speaks volume of the Police Force. So please, for once in your life look at the stats and take your anecdotal stories somewhere else.

These banned outfits have largely been left untouched in South Punjab because simply put, Punjab Police lacks the manpower, training and sophistication to target these groups all at once. They can surely pick and choose, but they lack the resources to go against them all at once. This is why the Rangers are needed to conduct an operation in Punjab because they have the manpower, training, discipline, firepower and most importantly the intelligence to pinpoint these groups.

If IK wants peace talks, why is KPK Police the leading force in the fight back against the TTP? They have so far been the most instrumental civilian force in dismantling terror networks in KPK.

Yea NO SHIIT???? That's precisely what the CM said. And journalists on IK's payroll colored it differently as always!! What SS said was that the RANGER should INVOLVE the ELITE FORCE too. WHY? Because they are not properly trained to handle these things in a real operation. By involving them, you are building LOCAL capability so that these guys can conduct these operations themselves in the future. And not have to wait for the Rangers or the Army and the bad guys run away due to lag.
I think every local law enforcement agency should have a Special Weapons and Tactics unit (SWAT) like it is in the US. These guys should be able to handle these terrorist scums immediately instead of waiting for a larger operation and Rangers.
