ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to move clocks forward by an hour from April 15, in a bid to make the maximum use of daylight and conserve energy. Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira told reporters that the federal cabinet had decided to continue with the ‘daylight saving policy’ introduced last year. He said the addition of an hour to the current time – (GMT+6) – would help conserve 250-300 megawatts of electricity on average daily. The decision came after a meeting of the federal cabinet on Wednesday discussed a summary for moving clocks forward by an hour. The cabinet members said they had made the decision in national interest.

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved a summary to move clocks forward by an hour against the wishes of Water and Power Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

Sources privy to a cabinet meeting on Wednesday said that Ashraf wanted to withdraw the summary, but other ministers backed the move, saying the decision should be made if it could save 250 megawatts of electricity daily.

“When the summary ... came up for discussion, the minister said he wanted to withdraw it because moving clocks forward in the past had not paid substantial dividends,” said the sources. Ashraf said the common man considered it an ‘unnecessary practice’ that only confused things. But most of the other cabinet members did not agree with him, and went ahead with the decision in national interest.

Census: Also, the federal cabinet put on hold its plan to launch a population and housing census in the country, the sources told Daily Times.

They said that the Population Census Division had sent a summary to the cabinet seeking permission to hold the population census from April 27 to May 11 and the housing census in October. But the cabinet decided to defer the plan, citing the prevailing security situation across the country. The cabinet members believe it would be a difficult exercise and the help of the army – which is already engaged in the war on terror – would be required in several areas.

The federal cabinet also turned down a summary moved by the Housing Ministry to increase funds for household furniture for cabinet members from Rs 100,000 to Rs 250,000.
