This Is The Clearest Photo Yet Of Chinese Navy’s J-35 Fighter​

The clearest image to date of China's future carrier-borne stealth fighter known as J-35 surfaced this week on Chinese social media Weibo.​

The twin engine aircraft will be flown by the People's Liberation Army Navy Air Force (PLANAF) from China's future Type-003 Fujian-class aircraft carriers...


The high resolution picture shows the third J-35 prototype with tail number 350003 as well as several other interesting details:

  • The fighter features an IRST sensor under the nose. It looks similar to the F-35’s Electro-Optical Target System (EOTS) and likely has a similar role.
  • The engines feature sawtooth nozzles. This is to reduce heat signature and therefore improve stealth in the infra-red (IR) spectrum.
  • The main landing gear is “beefed up” to allow for CATOBAR operations. Sadly the front landing gear is hidden by a technician and we can not see the presence of a “launch bar”, typically used for catapult launch. But previous, lower quality, images of the J-35 in flight showed the launch baron the front landing gear.
  • The radar dome (at the nose) appears to be canted. This likely indicates the presence of a tilted Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar antenna.
  • The cockpit shows the presence of a good old head-up display (HUD), while on the F-35, the HUD is replaced by an advanced helmet mounted display system (HMDS).
  • The canopy configuration and its opening is similar to that of the F-35.
  • The tip of the vertical stabilizer shows the “flying shark” logo, typically seen on J-15 carrier borne fighters currently deployed on the PLAN’s Liaoning and Shandong carriers.

Earlier pictures of the unpainted aircraft showed the design features folding wings (to reduced the footprint when stored onboard the carrier). But this is almost impossible to tell when looking at the picture of 350003 (potentially indicating a high level of quality). The aircraft is designed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and the picture was likely taken at the Harbin Aircraft Industry Group test facility in Harbin.

The aircraft will be flying from the Type-003 Fujian-class aircraft carriers, the first of which was launched last month. The Type-003 will be massive. It is roughly comparable to the U.S. Navy’s Ford Class. This will be a CATOBAR (catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery) design. Thanks to its three EMALS (electro-magnetic aircraft launch system) catapults, it will be able to launch the J-35 as well as KJ-600 airborne early warning & Control (AEW&C) aircrat.

The official designation of China’s new twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft is not known yet. Most open sources calls it “J-35” or “J-XY), some even calls it a variant of the FC-31. A full-size model of the stealth plane first appeared in June 2021 at land based testing facility: A full-sized mock-up of a real Chinese Navy aircraft carrier, located at Wuhan. Naval News‘ regular contributor H I Sutton covered at length the development at the time, pointing out the similarities between the aircraft and the FC-31.
The airframe complies with the new norms of stealthy aircraft design. Carefully aligned angles, a mix of sharp chines and blended surfaces, and sawtooth edges to panels. Over the course of its development, since its first flight in 2013. Three prototypes have flown with the latest, in 2020, being considered closer to a production aircraft.
A internal weapons bay spans the lower fuselage a lot like the F-22. This can carry the PL-15 medium range air-air missile. Like the F-35, additional weapons can be carried in underwing hardpoints. These will increase the aircraft’s radar cross-section so they are not normally seen.

The project proceed at lightning speed since approved and funded by PLAAF/PLANAF in 2019.

Since it is using lots of mature technology from J-20, I can bet it may enter limited service in 2024 if everything goes smoothly.

Is it being approved by Chinese PLA now ? That's new to me.

FC-31 is an Air Force bird targeting export and possibly domestic use. J-35 is a carrier aircraft but it is based off the FC-31. Relationship is a bit like Su-27 and Su-33.

The most trusted friends are Pakistan and Cuba. Pakistan always has the highest priority to purchase all weapons that are allowed to be exported.

Don't forget us in Bangladesh as well, after Pakistan and Cuba gets theirs. Unless there are technology export issues.

And possibly Myanmar too - although the Tatmadaw has other fish to fry for now. :-)
