SRINAGAR: Fire gutted one of the most revered Sufi Muslim shrines in the Indian administered part of the divided Kashmir region on Monday, sparking clashes between police and angry protesters, witnesses said.

Protesting residents were angered over what they said was a slow response by firefighters.

At least six people were hurt in the main city of Srinagar when police fired teargas at stone-throwing protesters.

The cause of the fire at the 350-year-old shrine which housed a relic of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani, an 11th century Sufi saint, was not immediately known.

The blaze started from the roof of the shrine shortly after morning prayers and quickly engulfed the wooden structure, a police official said.

“After morning prayers, fire started from the roof top of the shrine. We’re still trying to determine the cause,” said Farooq Ahmad, another police official at the scene. “The holy relic of the Sufi saint is safe and has been retrieved.”

Scores of firefighters tried to douse the flames, but protesters threw stones at them, saying their response was slow. Thousands of people later crowded nearby streets, chanting anti-India slogans and demanding Kashmir’s freedom from Indian rule.

Police sealed off roads leading to the shrine where hundreds of men and women had gathered, many of them wailing and crying.

“I feel like I’ve lost everything,” cried a 45-year-old woman, Shameema Akhtar, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Clashes also erupted in at least four other neighborhoods in Srinagar, with protesters throwing stones at police and officers responding by firing bullets into the air and using tear gas, the officer said.

Rioters also torched a fire engine and threw stones at firefighters and some members of the media.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. Shops and businesses stayed closed.

More trouble in India.

where is the link ??

Don't fall for the the misleading title. It was a fire, when the fire brigade tried to reach the site these idiots started pelting stones at them.

Apparently a random fire is also India's fault.

Another 26/11 on Indian Muslims.

Fire destroys historic shrine, triggering anger in Kashmir

Source: CNN

Srinigar, India (CNN) -- A blaze in a historic Sufi shrine in Indian-controlled Kashmir's capital on Monday triggered widespread anger and violence.

The 200-year-old shrine, a classic of Kashmir architecture, caught fire early Monday morning. The wooden shrine was quickly destroyed.

Efforts by firefighters could not save the ornate structure, named for an 11th-century Iraqi saint, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani, who never visited Kashmir.

The gutting of the highly revered shrine set off angry protests and clashes between police and protesters in the old city. Authorities put extra security measures in place.

A police spokesman said though the shrine was damaged, the relics it contained were safe.

He also confirmed that 20 people, including 10 police officers, were injured in the clashes.

Several religious and separatist organizations called for a protest shutdown for Tuesday.

Kashmir is having a booming tourist season. Peace has prevailed in this Himalayan region after the deadly unrest of summer 2010, which claimed 112 lives and left hundreds of others wounded.

"Indian attacked 200-year-old Kashmir shrine"? wtf?? what a retarded comment... If fire breaks out- what is the fault of India or government in this? :girl_wacko:

Anyways more on the topic-

A fire has broken out at the more than 100-year-old shrine of Dastgeer Sahib in the Khanyar area of Srinagar. Fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control at the shrine that is mostly made up of wood. However ancient relics of the saint, housed in the Shrine have been saved and retrieved. Officials say since they were kept in a fire-proof safe they remained unharmed.

Great works by fire fighters in protecting ancient relics... :agree:

. . . .
Holy $hit even an accident is now India's fault. Fire happened while they were praying, and it is 200 years old and is a wooden structure. Even in the news it says that cause is yet to be determined. And how can the Fire fighters work if people are running around everywhere and attacking them when they are working, they even burnt down a fire truck.

. . .
shame on you shameless indians.

It appears that Indian oppression of Kashmir is way worse than before. These poor souls have been suffering this for what - 7 decades now? Why hasn't a referendum been conducted in Kashmir yet regarding their status? How does India justify her occupation of this state? Prefer to hear from sources other than Indian ones.

.
So a fire broke out in one of the separatist camps. Indian firefighters ( kashmiris btw ) responded by sending firefighters. The idiots threw stones at the firefighters, which hampered their movement.

And now "India" is blamed for not responding quickly.

See how logical that sounds ?
