The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) has widening the circle of investigation from the suspect allegedly linked with TTP involved in demanding a heavy amount of extortion on behalf of the banned militant group after obtaining his physical remand from the court of law, sources in the CIA said.
The CIA arrested the suspect identified as Faheem Khan, reportedly programme producer of a private TV channel in Islamabad. He was taken into custody on the complaint of a businessman, Shahid Hamid, a resident of Sector F-8, who informed police that an unidentified man called him introducing himself as a leader of TTP and demanded Rs10 million as extortion or ransom. According to the businessman, the caller threatened that he would be killed or kidnapped if he failed to pay the ransom amount to the TTP.
The police high-ups, taking action on the complaint, assigned the task to the CIA which traced the location and later identity of the suspect through mobile technology and finally arrested him.
The suspect, during investigation, confessed to his crime, saying that he had twice received ransom or extortion from businessmen of Islamabad on his own by using the name of TTP.
The Margalla Police, when contacted, said that Faheem Khan, son of Anas Khan, hailing from Wah Cantonment, was traced and arrested in connection with the FIR Number 156/14, lodged with the Margalla Police Station, adding that he had been making calls to demand extortion by using the name of TTP. Police said that he was traced through his cell phone, and he had confessed to his crime.
The arrested man has been working with a private TV channel as producer with the pay package of Rs40,000 per month.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sikandar Hayat, when contacted for his comments, said that police were working carefully on the case for the last one month, adding that he referred the case to SP (CIA) Captain (r) Ilyas who detected the case and got the accused. He said that the accused was programme producer of a private TV channel and was a professional extortionist as he has targeted two other people in Islamabad.
