Kind-hearted police officers and toll-gate staff have come to the aid of a man who got lost on his way home to see his family during Spring Festival.

The man had been attempting to ride his bicycle from Shandong province to Heilongjiang, a distance of many hundreds of kilometers, because he couldn't afford a train ticket.

Unfortunately for the man, he was a month into his journey when he realized he had been traveling in the wrong direction.

The man was stopped by local traffic police as he rode along an expressway that's open only to motor vehicles.

He was in Wuhu, 536 kilometers south of his starting point in Rizhao city. After being interrogated by officers, the man came to realize his situation and told police that he might have been given wrong directions at some point during his journey.

Officer Wang Shuan said the man is a temporary worker who spent most of his money – which was not a great amount – in cybercafés, so he decided to ride to Qiqihar, Heilongjiang for his family reunion over the Spring Festival holiday.

Qiqihar is more than 2,000 kilometers north of Wuhu and officer Wang said police did not believe the man would be able to complete the journey on time. Expressway officers and toll-gate staff donated money so the man could buy a train ticket.

This is why China is still a major developing nation with many primary tasks to be completed. Nonetheless, happy ending for the cybercafé loving friend (perhaps to talk to family?). He will be home before Spring Festival.

Foreign volunteers help make Chunyun easier

This Spring Festival, a group of foreigners volunteered to give something back to China as a gesture of thanks for what China has done for them.

Yu Zhongyan, was among about 80,000 passengers that will use Wuhan railway station each day during the Spring Festival travel rush, or Chunyun, this year.

She was deeply touched when the volunteers offered to help her with her bags.

"They made our holiday special this year," said the granny with her grandson in arms.

Wuhan, the capital city of the central province of Hubei, is one of the country's busiest railway hubs. This year 28 foreign students from 15 countries, wearing yellow hats and orange vests, were on hand to help passengers.

Thursday is Bassim Mohammed Dahash Aljizani's last day in Wuhan. He earned his doctorate at Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Together with his wife and three sons, the man had five suitcases and a buggy. Sadi Makangila Patrick from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Agil Mubariz from Azerbaijan hurried to help.

Aljizani told Xinhua that he will take the train to Guangzhou, before flying back to Baghdad. "I have been in Wuhan for four years and I really don't want to leave, but my country needs me," he said.

"It is great experience to see people off at the station," said Areen Muhammed, a student from Iraq. "The work is tiring. But when I see the smiles, I feel so happy."

"China's government provides us scholarship for our study here," said another volunteer from Sri Lanka. "China helped me, and in return, I would like to do something for the people here." [

Yuan Gaoping, an official with Wuhan railway bureau, said that by working in the station, the volunteers could experience Chunyun, and experience Chinese culture and the development of its railway firsthand.

Yu Zhongyan asked Patrick to pose for a photo together, before bidding farewell to the foreign "uncle." "Thank you," said the boy, while Yu waved, "Happy New Year."

The week-long Spring Festival holiday witnessed 408 million passenger trips in China, up 2.1 percent year on year, data from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) showed Friday.

Between Jan. 27 and Feb. 2, the number of road trips totaled 336 million, a 0.8 percent increase from last year, while train trips reached 52 million with an annual increase of 8.8 percent.

More breakdown figures showed that air travel exceeded 9.82 million trips, surging 14.9 percent from last year, while boat trips topped 10.35 million, a rise of 3.5 percent.

About 2.98 billion trips are expected to be made during this year's Spring Festival travel rush, known as Earth's biggest human migration, between Jan. 13 and Feb. 21.

The average distance traveled was 262 km as most trips were intra-province and 87.8 percent of the trips were within a range of 500 km, MOT data showed.

Nearly 80 percent of the travels were for visits to relatives and friends, as the festival is the most important occasion for family reunions.

The Guangzhou South Railway Station was the most used transportation hub during the migration, followed by Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station, all of which are seated in major cities with significant populations of migrant workers.
