Chinese workers shot in Pakistan

Chinese workers shot in Pakistan
Three Chinese workers have been shot dead by suspected Islamic militants in the Pakistani city of Peshawar.
Gunmen shouting religious slogans attacked the Chinese men at a small auto-rickshaw factory. A fourth Chinese worker was wounded in the attack.

Officials believe the attack might be linked to the stand-off at an Islamabad mosque where students are barricaded.

That siege began after Islamist students abducted seven Chinese workers they accused of running a brothel.

The Pakistani government is facing pressure from Beijing to do more to protect Chinese workers in the country.

Following the Sunday evening killings in Peshawar, China's ambassador in Islamabad urged Pakistan to "round up the culprits, properly handle the follow-up issues and take effective measures to protect all the Chinese in Pakistan".

Recurrent violence

The Pakistani authorities say wanted Islamic militants are in control of the Red Mosque and holding hundreds of women and children as human shields to prevent a full army assault.

Several Chinese women were briefly held hostage at the mosque before the siege began last week.

The women were accused by the mosque students of involvement in prostitution and were only freed after the authorities promised to shut down certain massage parlours in the capital.

Chinese workers have also been targeted in recent years by separatist militants in the western province of Balochistan.

Three Chinese engineers were shot dead in the province in February last year.

North West Frontier Province, of which Peshawar is the capital, is the scene of frequent clashes between security forces and militants allied to the Taleban movement, active in neighbouring Afghanistan.

There is a saying in urdu

" Gadhay per bus nahin chala, Gahdi kay kaan marooray"

Literally means that because you couldnt do any thing to Donkey, you punished the female instead.

Extremists find it tough to fight the soldiers so they seek the soft targets. It is a great shame when the bigots attack our guests who have no quarrel with them whatsoever.

IMO it is a deliberate attempt by the extremists to attack friend of the Govt. They killed French workers 3 years back, last year they killed Chinese at Gawader and now at Charsadda. A connection with the Lal Masjid mob cannot be ruled out.

China was unhappy after a few chineese were taken hostages by the Lal masjid crowd and now this. But i guess chineese have suffered casualities even before.

This is really very sad. I dnt understand when will the government take serious action against the militants and protect the citizens aswell as the citizens of other countries and specially the ones from friendly countires like china. There has been another news abt ppl in the lal mosque who are not pakistanies as they were speaking different languages...is this true? and if it is then why the hell isnt the government taking serious actions against the countries they belong too after all their citizens doing terrorist activities in the name of islam in pakistan.

dead chinese were victim of robbery, nothing to do with terrorism. A workshop own by immigrant chinese in Charsadda.

Haider, just a few days ago Chinese government officially asked us to provide more security to chinese citizens in Pakistan. Even is it was a 'regular' robbery its going to cause damage to our relations with China.
China might consider to pull out its citizens out of Pakistan and issue an negative travel advise if we fail to provide basic secutiry.

And this is the Chinese Reaction-

In a press release by the Chinese embassy in Pakistan early today, Luo requested the Pakistani side "to investigate it, round up the culprits, properly handle the follow-up issues and take effective measures to protect all the Chinese in Pakistan."

Mao Siwei, deputy chief of the Chinese embassy in Pakistan, has left for Peshawar with a few Chinese diplomats to deal with the issue, the report said.

Haider,

This Line (as below) in news reports is causing reporters to link it with LM issue.:
The gunmen were said to be shouting religious slogans while shooting, according to witnesses

At the same time :
Pakistan police suspected in previous reports that the shooting might be an attempted robbery. However, the assumptions have been proven to be false, as the attackers didn't take anything with them when they fled the scene

China supports Pakistan's measures for stability
17:12, July 05, 2007

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in Beijing Thursday China bolsters those measures taken by the Pakistani government to maintain its stability.

Qin's comment came in response to the exchange of fire between religious students of hard-line Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, and law enforcers in Islamabad on Tuesday.

"As a friendly neighbour of Pakistan, China backs Pakistan's measures to safeguard social stability and economic development," Qin told a regular press conference.

Firing broke out between Lal Masjid personnel and law enforcers Tuesday noon after a group of 100 religious students of the mosque encircled some policemen deployed nearby and snatched arms from them.

A total of 1,200 male and female religious students of hard-line Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, surrendered to Pakistani authorities till Wednesday in the capital city.

Zhao jianguo, witness of the raid has attested above statement. the 3 killed are Zhao's son, nephew, and friend, and he got shot in the arm.

Translated from Sina.com

Islamabad, a senior official said that the attack is likely to be within the extremists' activities of a retaliation against government's attempt to wipe out the "Red Mosque". this is another terrorism by anti-government people since the Chinese hostage in last month. on June 23 critics and students from the red mosque had attacked an acupuncture clinic and kidnapped seven Chinese people as hostages, including six women, who were finally rescued with efforts of Pakistani government.

Pakistani army laid a siege to the red mosque last Tuesday, and China's Foreign Ministry expressed its support for the Pakistani government's action. Aslam, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned the attack and she said this incident will not affect relations between Pakistan and China.
