A Chinese destroyer came aggressively close to a U.S. Navy ship in the South China Sea, forcing it to maneuver to prevent a collision, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said Tuesday, describing an encounter that could worsen tensions between the nations.

The Chinese warship approached the USS Decatur in an "unsafe and unprofessional maneuver" on Sunday near Gaven Reefs in the South China Sea, said U.S. Pacific Fleet Spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Tim Gorman.

The Chinese destroyer "conducted a series of increasingly aggressive maneuvers accompanied by warnings for Decatur to depart the area," Gorman said in an emailed statement.

It approached within 45 yards (41 meters) of the Decatur's bow, forcing it to maneuver, Gorman said.

China claims most of the strategic waterway and has built islands on reefs and equipped them with military facilities such as airstrips, radar domes and missile systems.

The Chinese defense ministry said Tuesday it opposes the U.S. warship's entry into the waters "around China's islands and reefs." It confirmed that the Luoyang, a Chinese missile destroyer, was immediately deployed to identify the U.S. warship and drive it away.

The Chinese foreign ministry said it strongly urged the U.S. to stop its "provocative" actions.

Relations between the U.S. and China have deteriorated over an escalating trade dispute. But ties have worsened in recent weeks with a U.S. decision to issue economic sanctions over the purchase of Russian fighter jets and surface-to-air missile equipment.

Beijing said the U.S. had no right to interfere in Chinese military cooperation with Russia. In response to the sanctions, China summoned the American ambassador and defense attache to deliver a protest, and recalled its navy commander from a U.S. trip.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has since dropped plans to visit China in October for talks.

"Brave" US "warriors":
Braver than you will ever know. This incident with the PLAN is nothing more than the Chinese testing their limits, which we will give. But if there is a shooting fight, the PLAN will lose and lose badly.

Man is not meant to be in the air or on the water. But if we are to be in environment where nature have not made allowance for us, it mean whoever is in that environment must be TECHNICALLY sophisticated enough to survive. From that perspective, the USN have over 200 yrs worth of combat experience over the PLAN. We can afford to be patient because we know that in the end, the USN WILL bend the PLAN over the table make the PLAN our b!tch while the world watches.

A US Navy ship had an "unsafe" interaction with a Chinese warship Sunday while the US vessel was conducting a freedom of navigation operation near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, causing the US ship to maneuver "to prevent a collision," according to US defense officials. "A (People's Republic of China) Luyang destroyer approached USS Decatur in an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver in the vicinity of Gaven Reef in the South China Sea," Capt. Charles Brown, a spokesman for US Pacific Fleet, told CNN in a statement confirming the incident. Brown said the Chinese warship "conducted a series of increasingly aggressive maneuvers accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to depart the area."

He added that the Chinese destroyer "approached within 45 yards" of the front of the US ship, adding that the Decatur "maneuvered to prevent a collision."

China reiterated Tuesday that it opposes any operation that threatens its sovereignty after a Chinese navy ship drove away a US navy destroyer in the South China Sea.

"The US repeatedly sends military ships without permission into seas close to South China Sea islands, seriously threatening China's sovereignty and security, damaging Sino-US relations as well as military ties and harming regional peace and stability," said Wu Qian, spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense.

Wu said the Chinese navy ship conducted an identification and warning process to drive the USS Decatur away on Sunday, a day before China's National Day.

China has irrefutable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and the waters around them, and the situation there is progressing well thanks to the hard work of China and countries in Southeast Asia, Wu noted.

The Chinese armed forces will continue to take all necessary steps to protect the country's sovereignty and security, Wu said.

In a separate statement on Tuesday, China's Foreign Ministry said it strongly urges the US to stop such provocative actions and to correct its mistakes immediately.

The incident comes as military ties between the two countries have ebbed, with Beijing angered over Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.

The two countries are in a trade war, in which they have imposed increasingly severe rounds of tariffs on each other's imports.

Why the sh*tty, black-and-white Bigfoot type of photograph? Can't the USN afford decent cameras?

No, its to piss you off. You don't like watching it in black and white.

US Navy a threat to little girls also.

Chinese military disagrees with you.

The best way to take down intruder aircraft or vessel without provoking a shooting war is by ramming it.

This guy below take down an EP3.

USA got to tow their ship from South China Sea to San Diego or Philadelphia for every such damage.

China will win the war of attrition.

Why didn't Chinese pilots do more of that now? The new P-8 was right there.
