BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang in Beijing on Thursday, agreeing to expand common grounds and properly settle disputes.

Xi appreciated Sang's visit for China's V-Day celebrations, adding that it shows the great support the Vietnamese party and government have given to China for holding the event.

"We are in favor of properly handling disputes between both sides through dialogues, and expanding cooperation and common interests," Xi said.

Both countries are socialist countries led by communist parties, and it is a requirement for the two countries to enhance strategic coordination, exchanges and cooperation, so as to achieve the development goals of each country, said the Chinese president.

Hailing the stable growth of ties, Xi said both countries have reached important consensus in boosting capacity cooperation and aligning China's Belt and Road Initiative with Vietnam's Two Corridors and One Economic Circle plan.

"China-Vietnam ties face new opportunities," Xi said, calling for consolidating traditional friendship, expanding cooperation and cultural exchanges, and maintaining high-level contacts.

Sang said he was glad to attend China's commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II on Thursday.

The two sides have the responsibility to inherit and carry forward Vietnam-China friendly ties forged by older generations of the two countries' leaders, he said.

Vietnam hopes to strengthen political trust and personnel exchanges with China, properly handle differences and enhance win-win cooperation, Sang said.

Promising development.

Vietnam should see that in SCS , China is only responding in kind.

As yet, no step has been take to challenge the status quo.

Vietnam leadership obviously knows how to play the power balance game as a minor power, much smarter than how Philippine is handling the situation. Japan would be a good minor power to court with with little downside. Courting the US on the other hand while still remaining aloof of its grasp however would come with the increased risk of regime change.

3. We laugh as we drive little Viets out an island at a time.

Vietnam is definitely smarter than, say, the Philippines in geopolitical maneuvering. They not only grab the Philippines' islands and still make them feel happy, but, they also use them effectively against China, without putting in risk their own deep-seated relations with China.

Give respect where it is due, comrade. Frankly. Vietnam is a tough neighbor.

Truly. Vietnam has an iron heart, fierce resistance.

the are only two ways to settle the dispute:
1. CN return all our lost islands.
2. CN help VN to unify sub Mekong region like JP is help VN now
Japan charts road to industrialization for Mekong region

otherwise, thats all trash talk from Vn leader

Is it an either option, or you want both?

How about formalizing the status quo?

If CN chose option 1, then option 2 still happen with the help of Japan
If CN chose option 2, then VN will become bigger, stronger and we soon will take back our lost islands.

Just like VN unification was inevitable no one can divide VN like North-South Korea, we would find the way to unify our nation with or without China-Soviet help, so chairman Mao thought that supporting North VN to unify the nation is a better choice for China even unified VN will make lots of trouble for CN after that.

Vietnam is a communist country. Communists know how communists operate.

Vietnam is like a mini version of China. Taiwan and Hong Kong, although being Chinese are developed societies that developed under different political systems. So the people there see themselves as being 'upper class' to China and Vietnam.

China and Vietnam are both communists and both developing countries and both fought together in war. That's why you see many Chinese men marrying Vietnamese girls. Both countries are seen in the same 'class' despite one country having way more people than the other.

Even though Viets hate China, they lookup to China as a big brother. They won't admit it because of their pride but that's the truth. They want to do what China does. They want to be treated like a China. China treats Vietnam as a little brother and that angers the little brother.

Vietnam likes to punch above its weight. Both countries does things to annoy each other but still end up being pretty close.

Chinese and Vietnamese people are closer together than China and Taiwan/Hong Kong.

Japan even cannot stop its own de-industrialization. It helps industrialization for Mekong? What a joke!! All japan is doing is to increase cost of china, even at its own cost. Japan is no interest to industrialize Mekong region. Japan has cooperated with Thailand for years. But is Thailand industrialized? Japan just wants a cheap materials source and a market, not competitive industrialized countries as South Korea and China .

Japan just follows where China goes, no matter in ASEAN, India, Africa or Latin America. It just wants to increase cost of China, which is the order from Washington. If the mekong development stops or delays, it will be a victory for Japan since it destructs a potential Chinese Market. Believe or not, after 5 years, the road to industrialization for Mekong Region will still just be a plan.
