The Type 055 is equipped with a dual-band radar system that has anti-stealth and anti-satellite capabilities in low-Earth orbit, China Central Television (CCTV) reported last weekend. The anti-satellite capability in particular has prompted discussions among military observers.

Some of the advanced radar systems produced by modern technologies can detect low-Earth orbit aircraft, which often circulate the Earth at an altitude of 300 to 500 kilometers. If the radar system has a high enough performance, it can not only detect, but also track the satellites, which means the radar can then guide weapons to attack the satellites.

In an introduction video for Nanchang, the first ship of its type, released by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy during the Spring Festival holidays in February 2020, the service confirmed the ship has a displacement of more than 12,000 tons. The warship was previously only vaguely referred to as China's first 10,000-ton-class destroyer, without information of its exact displacement. "This has debunked some analysts' estimations that the Type 055's displacement is only a little more than 10,000 tons, and indicates the ship type could be even more powerful than expected," a military expert who asked not to be named told the Global Times.

The 12,000-ton figure could refer to a standard or normal displacement, so full displacement could potentially reach 13,000 tons, the expert estimated, noting that the Type 052D,
a previous classification of Chinese destroyer, has an approximate displacement of just 6,000 to 7,000 tons. Displacement is an important indicator of a warship's combat capability in multiple aspects including firepower and its ability to sail in high seas, as a larger displacement results in higher stability, more fuel and ammunition, analysts said.

With a displacement of more than 10,000 tons, the Type 055 is a 180-meter-long, 20-meter-wide guided missile destroyer with 112 vertical launch missile cells capable of launching a combination of surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, land-attack missiles and anti-submarine missiles, according to previous media reports.

Given the large size of the Type 055, it would be naturally able to carry a type of air-defense missile capable of reaching targets in low-Earth orbit,
Wang predicted, noting that the radar system used on the Type 055 can also transmit data via data chain to land-based air-defense forces which can launch anti-satellite missiles. Low-Earth orbit satellites can monitor vast regions of battlefields and provide rich intelligence to their operators. In wartime, if one side can suppress hostile satellites, it can neutralize a key part of a hostile intelligence source and gain an advantage for itself.

While it is also the first time that China's state-owned media has confirmed the Type 055's anti-stealth capability, it is not much of a surprise when compared with its anti-satellite capability, as China has already revealed several types of anti-stealth radar systems in many open occasions, military observers said. In a test conducted in 2007, China successfully destroyed a satellite, BBC reported at the time. Liu Jianchao, then spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, confirmed the test and stressed China was committed to the peaceful development of outer space.

Nanchang marks China's achievement of a globally advanced level in terms of surface vessel propulsion technology and that the warship's speed is of the top class. It did not reveal details of the ship's propulsion system or the ship's top speed. Analysts predict Type 055 has variants that will use full electric propulsion in the future, which could enable more optimized power distribution and realize the usage of high-energy weapons like lasers.

In open sea yes however not suitable in dense environment of south china sea where some certain coastal countries field array of shore missile batteries.
the missiles can overwhelm any air defense of destroyers no matter 5,000 ton or 13,000 ton.
So I assume the PLA would pack those ships midst of Pacific then launch missile attacks on San Francisco and San Diego.

Honestly, SEA countries around SCS have literally ZERO air-defense capability... You are hopeless even in front of our DJI drones, or drones like this one:
Let alone our stealth drones and long range drones controlled by our satellites and operated globally...
BTW, you do not even have one single missile with range >300 km..., and because your defense budgets are so tiny, less than the budget of one or two of our universities, lol, your tiny little arsenal of missiles can't even make a scratch of our fleet...LMAO...

Once again, don't talked on the topic which you have no knowledge about, this is not 1 vs 1 game, even if it is a one on one situation, your country is decades behind in EW capability.

Man, such drone thing you develop is nothing special. in case you haven‘t noticed there are effect weapons against drones. Rapid firing gun is one of them. We make such guns like make shoes. Em masse.

LMAO... such drones are as cheap as women's bras... We can make millions of them within couple of hours... Look at Azerbaijan Armenia war you will know your country can't sustain a drone war, let' alone a drone war with China, the master of drones... We will just sit in a control room, and watch our drones overwhelm you like playing a computer game...lol...

Again exposed your little knowledge in this regard, no one knows more than you, mr viet trump.
China and US are investing heavily in Swarm drone concepts, seems like they all needed your advice and quit the projects.

You seriously believe one weapon can decide war? Ok I hope you are a PLA member.

C'mon we had a several conversation, you knew very well that you guys needed to upgrade even the basic equipments, let alone countering new concepts, but ofc, over here or in other thread, you just down play everything and said, we are fine, this is nothing, ok, carry on.
why upgrade anything when everything is fine, right?

Well, there are means to deal with drones of course, and those countries who make the best drones also have the best weapons to counter drones, but vn apparently is not one of those countries...lol... And this kind of low budget drones are made to attack low-tech countries such as vn whose air defense system is too primitive, actually worse than Armenia... You still think you can hide in the jungle today in the 2nd decade of 21st century...lol...

Nonsense
I never downplay chinese military in general.
I treat you with respect.
I just point out strength and weakness of weapons systems.

His replied will be " nonsense, we shot down xxx numbers of yankees plane"...blah blah.

OK, let me gived you a hint on the problem of dealing with these loitering munition, it is just difficult to detect/track such small target, let alone a swarm coming from all different direction.
China is investing a lot in swarm and anti swarm, yes, it is not a easy task even for our air defense, the current concepts is 4 layers of AA with last layer being laser.

Yes, we also have developed sophisticated jamming system to counter drone attacks...As I have already told him, the countries make advanced drones knows how to deal with them, but surely not for those low-tech backward countries who still think they can hide in caves in the 21 century...

The US has means I don’t think they have problem in dealing with chinese drone threat. As for Vietnam,
Sure it’s not easy if drones come in hundreds in all directions. we need make more radar guided CIWS and more rounds.
