Chinese shipyards bag half of global dual-fuel newbuild orders in 2022​

In 2022 Chinese yards inked 49% of global newbuild orders for dual-fuel green vessels, increasing by 24% comparing with the number in the year earlier.

According to statistics from China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), the global market share of newly received green vessel orders had been increased from 30% in 2021 to 51% in 2022. Methanol fuel was becoming popular and 43 newbuilds were using methanol fuel in 2023.

Xue Guoliang, deputy director of technical division, DACKS, said that more clients were inquiring about methanol-fuelled vessels. “We have inked five super-large containerships order using methanol as fuel last year.”

Lin Qing, deputy general manager of CSSC Jiangnan Shipyard said that 90% new orders the shipyard had secured last year were green fuel vessels.

“IMO has been promoting greenhouse gas emission reduction of marine industry, we must use alternative energy to achieve higher emission reduction targets, adopting green fuel for vessels is the general trend,” said Li Yanqing, secretary-general of CANSI.

In 2022, newly received order volume of Chinese yards was 45.52m dwt, ranking top one among global shipbuilding market.
