Chinese Mainland cities set to overtake HK

15-12-2011
Hong Kong has been ranked as the most competitive city in China, followed by Shanghai and Beijing. That's according to an annual survey by the China Institute of City Competitiveness.

But the institute said Shanghai and Beijing were rising fast towards the top spot. It said the size of Shanghai's economy had already exceeded that of Hong Kong's. It expects Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen will also surpass Hong Kong in two years time.

the reason why Shanghai and Beijing and other cities overtook or will overtake HongKong in economy is just because those cities have several times more people than HongKong in their respcetive cities, but when it comes to per capita,HongKong still has a huge lead.

I visited Guangzhou Shenzhen and Honk Kong a couple of years ago. I was very impressed. Congrats are in order to chinese development
Have you been to Mumbai or Delhi? How would you compare the those?

Shanghai already overtook HK in 2009, so Beijing will overtake it this year or 2012?
Nobody is overtaking HK anytime soon. HK is far far more developed than even the most core CBD areas of mainland China. People in HK are generally much more cultured.

Guangzhou is a pretty crappy place, though. Big mess of pollution and construction debris. All the bad stories come out of Guangdong province.

Why the mainland cities can never match Hong Kong in competitiveness.

1. Hong Kong has a British legal system. Mainland cities are basically lawless.
2. Hong Kong is business friendly. Mainland cities have so much red tapes and hands demanding a bribe to do anything.
3. Everyone but the mainlanders speak English in Hong Kong. Nobody except foreigners speak English in mainland cities.

Beijing's GDP will surpass HK this year (or from the most conservative view, next year), as for GDP per capita, Ordos will overtake HK this year.

Generally speaking, HK grows at a speed of 5% per year while Mainland cities at 10 to 20% per year. There is no way we can't catch up HK.

Shanghai has already surpassed us in terms of GDP, and scores higher than us on the OECD education tests.

Beijing was always stronger than us in terms of political, cultural and technical power. And soon, it will surpass us in GDP too.

The only thing that we still have a lead on, is standard of living and economic competitiveness. :P (HK has the second highest life expectancy on Earth).

But this is only the beginning. If you think the mainland cities are great now, wait ten more years and you will see some true miracles.
