The government of the Pakistani province of Sindh has announced plans to make Chinese compulsory in schools from 2013.

All educational institutions in the province will have to provide Chinese language courses from class six (10-11-year-olds), it says.

The provincial government says that the decision was taken because of Pakistan's close ties with China.

The two countries have been strong allies for more than 50 years.

In May, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani described China as his country's "best friend".

But some critics say the plan is political, will need considerable investment in teaching staff and materials, and further stretch limited resources.

Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq said that the initiative reflected China's growing role as an economic giant in the world and would benefit Pakistan in the long term.

"Our trade, educational and other relations are growing with China everyday and now it is necessary for our younger generation to have command over their language," he said.

The provincial government says that students will be given incentives, including foreign scholarships, to encourage them to study Chinese.

The Sindh government says that it will seek help from China to go ahead with the plan and is now in the process of devising a syllabus.

Teachers critical of the scheme say it will put an additional burden on them and students, who already have to learn three languages - English, Urdu and Sindhi - as compulsory subjects.

Good move..
Chinese language is very easy. You just need to memorize 1500 of their word and put them together in a sentence. Thats it. There is no grammer invoved. Pronunciation kinda tricky though.

there is alot of grammar. i dont get why people say chinese has no grammar.

Good move. I tried learning Mandarin once, but it was ridiculously tough (though Chinese-Dragon begs to differ :P)

If this students learn the language when they're young, it'll be useful to them in the future working world. I'm assuming they're also learning English, so basically they have the top two languages in the world covered and add that with Urdu, they can communicate in the western world, Chinese world, and the Sub-continent. That's alot of regions covered there :)

IMHO, I think It can be offered in HSSE and Bachelors level where person is at least done with english...In sixth Grade a person starting both Chinese and English will certainly be burdened.
P:S in some business schools like our IBA,a second foreign language is a must in qualification requirements (They offer Chinese and Japanese at the moment)

The earlier the better....learning languages as an adult is difficult.

10-11 year olds? That is far too young to be learning FOUR languages.

They already have to handle their local dialect, their national language, and English too. Why add a fourth one?

Make it voluntary instead of compulsory.

This, despite the availability of a vast treasure of knowledge available in bookstores and libraries with which a questioning mind can easily puncture the spew of lies, half-truths and myths spun into the nation’s collective psyche—all in the name of defending the country’s Islamic heritage and the so-called ideology. The other reason is the most prominent though. It has something to do with a state of mind that is a culmination of fear, ignorance and guilt. Thanks to the maliciously tempered history taught to us of Islam and Pakistan in our schools, class results and and colleges as well as with their results, I have noticed that very few young Pakistanis have any ability left in them to question (in an informed manner) what is dished to them by the courts, the state, the clerics and the televangelists as ‘Islam’ and ‘nationalism.’
