According to a recently-updated report by Thomson Reuters into innovation in Asia, by the end of 2011 China had overtaken every other country in the world in the number of invention patents it files each year. This landmark event occurred a year earlier than Thomson Reuters had previously predicted in its 2008 report into Chinese patent filings.

‘Patents are very tangible measures of innovation,’ said Bob Stembridge, customer relations manager of Thomson Reuters and author of the company’s report into patenting in China. ‘The country is transforming from "made in China" to "designed in China".

take care! dogs are on the way biting you!
back to the topic ,we still need to improve the quality of patents!:china:

You're right, we need to improve the average quality of the patents.

However, being the number 1 country in terms of the number of patents being filed is a very good sign.

It's a good first step, and we need to keep moving forward.

very lax rules by the authorities to pump up the figures 99% of these don't qualify for the patents as they are just some addition/twist to the already patented techs.

No innovation just to boast the ego and propaganda very very communist thing.

And we have a winner!

"The idea of subsidizing patents is not bad in itself, however it is a blunt instrument because you get high figures for filings, but it does not tell you anything about the quality of the patents filed," said Elliot Papageorgiou, a Partner and Executive at law firm Rouse Legal (China)".

"One thing is volume, quality is quite another. The return, or the percentage of grants, of the patents is still not as high in China as, say, in the U.S., Japan or some places in Europe".

In the end it is not the amount filed but the results.

How much of this 'patent innovation' has been translated to actual innovation?

For example we hear about numerous technologies in the US and Japan, Railguns, Lasers, Drugs for AIDS, Exoskeletons, 3d printing, learning robots, Commercial Space, etc. Multiple companies are working on these sorts of projects and very nice results have been shown from all in getting them involved in the mainstream economy (especially with regards to 3d printing).

How have China's patent filers taken their patents and applied them for gain?

We need not only have more patents but also those that have strong impacts for the future. So far, we may have the former but still lack the latter. Let's be clear about that.
