Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow afternoon to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues with Bangladesh leadership.

Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque will receive the Chinese Foreign Minister who is likely to reach Dhaka at 5pm on a two-day trip, a senior official told UNB today.

Neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka shared his programme schedule in detail till the time of filing this report this evening.

Minister Wang is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday morning apart from holding a bilateral meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart AK Abdul Momen the same day.

"This is going to be different from other bilateral visits. I can't tell you in details at this moment as many things are still under last minute discussion," another official familiar with the development told UNB, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader will host a dinner in honour of the Chinese foreign minister tomorrow evening, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam.

Foreign Minister Momen is expected to return home tomorrow night from Cambodia after attending the ASEAN Regional Forum meeting (August 5-6).

Talking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, Shahriar Alam said Bangladesh and China are likely to sign multiple MoUs and agreements during Wang's visit.

He said the list is not finalised yet and it can be five-seven – new and renewal including cooperation on the disaster management and cultural exchange fronts.

Shahriar assured that the planned MoUs and agreements will be aligned with Bangladesh's cultural, social and economic policy though the list is not finalised yet.

The state minister said the relationship between Bangladesh and China is "deep and wide" and the two countries will discuss areas of future cooperation.

Responding to a question, the state minister said Bangladesh will seek a stronger role from the Chinese government for early repatriation of the Rohingyas.

In January 2017, Wang had an hour-long stopover in Dhaka. This time, he is coming for a longer period.

The visit is taking place amid growing geopolitical tensions with impact on developing countries in the region while experts suggest Bangladesh to ensure a strategic balance amid these tensions.

Earlier, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said taking a new loan from China will not be a part of their agenda during the Chinese foreign minister's Bangladesh visit.

"This time, the issue of taking loan afresh isn't there at least," he said on Wednesday when a reporter wanted to know whether Bangladesh is going to take a loan from China again.

Asked what message this visit carries amid the crisis in various parts of the world, the foreign secretary said it will be known once the Chinese foreign minister comes. "We are working on the visit. Things are yet to be finalised."

He reiterated that the visit is part of the Chinese side's routine visit to the region and also it is an opportunity to review the existing engagements between the two countries.

Well I wish Bangladesh will be convinced not to go to bloody IMF !

It's time to choose ; either bloody western bloc , or Chinese bloc!

If they choose western bloc , we will be doomed!

Well the Foreign Ministry did say they are not discussing any new loans. I don't know what will be in the agenda.....

Actually imo Bangladesh should follow the lead of most ASEAN countries and maintain neutrality. That would be the best course for Bangladesh.

Yes. This is wise policy.

We don't need to openly alienate anyone. At least officially.

We must keep relations with China for economic partnership and investments.

At the same time we cannot afford to anger or alienate customers in the West.

Choosing sides would be a very stupid thing to do.

And would demonstrate the weakness of Bangladesh.

Hasina is artfully playing all the protagonists against each other.

None of them can afford to alienate Bangladesh given Bangladesh can gift the decisive edge in an Indo-China war.

Hopefully the Chinese dude can help Bangladesh break the bloody Russia sanctions.

We should make it clear that we do not give a toss about the Burmese junta supporting Ukraine.

Bloody Ukrainians are holding the world hostage through their belligerence.

I also want to maintain neutral policy , unless it's absolutely necessary for Bangladesh to choose any side!

So if all countries have no other option but to choose any side , only then my message applies.

As anyday I will choose China over hypocrite west!

Before the day ( God forbid if we were given a choice ) I also want to maintain neutral position!

Bangladesh government must emphasise to Yi on the need for directing Chinese outsourcing of manufacturing to Bangladesh to reduce our dependency on the West for foreign currency. Instead of offering platitudes and high interest loans, the Chinese must help Bangladesh shield itself from Western hegemony if they want our support on controversial matters.
Bangladeshi officials must register their "severe dissatisfaction" with Yi on Chinese manufacturing going to countries like Vietnam despite not being on friendly terms (I know, I know, Vietnam is better resourced and located to take on Chinese manufacturing but we need to play our own cards with China to overcome the economic disadvantage).

We must also routinely remind China of how "appalled" we are by their lack of support on rehabilitation of Rohingyas back to Burma and how it is "forcing" us to welcome Western intervention on this matter.

We need to start being assertive in our diplomatic manoeuvres.
Bin the idiotic policy of "Friendship for all..." and run with "Buy t-shirts or get f**ked".

BD is and will remain a neutral state.

It will engage economically with all power-blocks in the world and it is a fallacy to think that a country of 165 million people needs to choose a side in this ongoing competition between China and the West.

BD is a populous enough state that it can maintain strategic independence in this world.

You won't say the same thing if suddenly your govt fall and any technocrat govt take power with military backup!

It looks your patriotism is heavily dependent upon your political ideology, which is not patriotism at all!

If you can say all the things you are saying now when even AL isn't in power,I will openly apologize for this post, if we both still stay here!

Here others are witness!

I also hope your many other optimistic views on Bangladesh remain same , even if BAL fall!

Your post is a word salad!

It makes no sense at all!!

Bangladesh is not open to blackmail for the following reasons:

1. Doesn’t need geo-political and military support because it is not in mortal combat with a powerful neighbour.

2. Is not an economic basket case that is dependent on foreign aid.

3. Cannot be demonised as an extremist country or led by someone who plays to western stereotype of a Muslim.

4. Our military establishment doesn’t have the loyalty of the general population. And is thankfully not that powerful. They have been literally cut down to size after the chaos they caused in the 70s and 80s.

5. Bangladesh is a homogeneous society that cannot be curved up like Vietnam, Libya, Afghanistan, Burma, Sri Lanka et al —- by hostile countries.

Poster is on my 'ignore' list for making little sense, even when his English is understandable.

Still no idea why anyone thinks that BD will ever need to choose any of the two sides here.

BD does not do sides and will not have to choose due to its substantial population and united national structure.

As for current BD reliance on Western exports, think too many posters are not paying enough attention to some of our conversations as it will not last too much longer.

In the next 10-15 years BD will probably export as much to India and China together as much as the whole West combined.

By 2030 China will even need to start importing for its own domestic textile market as it totally lose competitiveness and that is a massive opportunity for low-cost garment exporters like BD.

We need to start thinking a little more deeply than some of the superficial thinking that we are displaying here.

These guys have been schooled by Bangladeshi YouTubers masquerading as serious intellectuals.

Posting YouTube videos as fact - is cringeworthy!

It is very important to distinguish between facts and personal opinions.

Conclusions are drawn based on facts.

Commentary is based on personal opinions.

I love listening to people’s opinions but would never use it to draw conclusions.

A true intellectual knows the difference between facts and opinions.
