Chinese firms build $1.75 bln power plant in Vietnam

Mon Jul 20, 2015 2:16am GMT

HANOI, July 20 (Reuters) - Chinese energy firms China Southern Power Grid and China Power International Development Co have joined force to build a $1.75 billion coal-fired power plant in southern Vietnam, state coal mining group Vinacomin said.

Construction of the 1,200-megawatt Vinh Tan 1 power plant began on Saturday in the province of Binh Thuan, and its first generator is scheduled to start operation in December 2018, Vinacomin said in a statement at the weekend.

The second generator will be operational in June 2019, helping reduce blackouts in Vietnam's southern region, it said.

The project, China's biggest investment in Vietnam, is 55 percent owned by China Southern Power Grid, with China Power International Development Co holding 45 percent and Vinacomin the remaining 5 percent, the statement said.

The government has said power plants in the country's central and southern regions would have to use imported coal, and that most would come from Indonesia and Australia.

Vietnam has been cutting coal exports to save fossil fuel for thermal power plants, as it struggles to meet soaring energy demand, projecting economic growth of 6.2 percent this year.

Coal exports in the first half of 2015 plunged an estimated 76.3 percent from a year ago to 1.08 million tonnes, following an annual drop of 44 percent last year to 7.17 million tonnes, government statistics show. (Reporting by Ho Binh Minh; Editing by Michael Perry)

Before we give it to vietnam, we will make as much as cash from it for 25 years.:-)
we buy the energy for a price that is guaranteed for running period. you can´t press more juice from a squeezed citrone.

Win-win for both sides ... just Vietnam hard to accept that 5 percent share of power plant investment. :o:
why should we have any problems at all? vietnam government just scraps nearly all limits on private enterprises. any foreign investor can buy and invest up to 100 per cent stakes. besides, the constructions of nuclear power plants delay for some years, so that is the reason why vietnam approves more coal fired plants.

Vietnam scraps foreign ownership limits in investment push

CN gov is pragmatic. We will not try to press juice from a squeezed citrine.

We have tech and equipment and you need power supply to develop your country.

And our offer is reasonable ,you buy it . It is just business , simple like that.

exactly, you get a good returns on your investment. garanteed.
but china should do more, at least to the level of korea and japan investments. $40b each.

Vietnam needs electricity to grow, China has an abundance of capital. How is this not a win-win? And sorry, a coal fired plant is not a strategic asset. China's ownership won't mean the end of Vietnamese sovereignty..

Well.
I think CN have a wish to invest huge money.
But our business men have scruple of political issue. We may lose all of our investments in just one day. You know the reason.

Viets are a paranoid bunch, coal-fired plant is considered 'strategic' to Viets.

Yes, hoping that investment will increase over time. It is still too little compared to other developed economies. But China is just warming up.

It is just an investment and Vietnam's sovereignty is just as strong.
