The influx of Chinese students at Israeli universities has been growing steadily in recent years.

On the forefront of this enrollment boom is the University of Haifa, which currently boasts some 200 Chinese students among its student body, compared to 20 in 2013, representing a 1,000% increase.

A majority of these students come from the University of East China Normal University in Shanghai, which is a sister city of Haifa's.

University of Haifa president Ron Robin welcomes the addition. “The cooperation with strategic partners from Chinese industry and academia serves the strategic goals of the university,” said Robin. “We have positioned ourselves as a leading international institution. As such, we welcome all the Chinese students to Israel, and intend to continue to deepen the ties and cooperation with the Chinese academy.”

These ties can result in profitable research and development, in which millions of dollars are currently being invested in the hopes of further strengthening the bonds between the two countries.

This past March, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Economy Minister Eli Cohen were present when Robin, along with the Hangzhou Wahaha Group and the Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed a $10-million deal that finalized the construction of three Israeli-Chinese artificial intelligence technology centers in Haifa, Hangzhou and Beijing.

According to the university, this deal “proved the growing strength of the relationship between the two countries.”

But the university insists that there’s a lot in it for the students as well, saying that “the Chinese love Haifa’s location that combines mountains and sea, and are very impressed by the city’s large high-tech complex.”

And it’s not just science-based courses that are attracting the students to Haifa, according to a statement released by the university. “In general, Chinese students are particularly interested in the disciplines for which the University of Haifa has developed unique programs: maritime studies, public health, medical clowning, art therapy, education, national security studies and the English-speaking Global Green MBA, focusing on sustainability and ecological-friendly development – two of the main economic challenges in China.”

Across town, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology has also seen an influx of Chinese students in recent years. During the 2016-2017 academic year, the school had 117 full-time Chinese students, and 177 Chinese students enrolled in its summer school of engineering.

The Technion has been intensifying its academic cooperation with Chinese universities and students, and in 2013, together with Shantou University (STU), received a $130 million grant from the Li Ka Shing Foundation to establish a branch of the Technion in the Guangdong Province.

The Technion hailed the partnership as “a new era of research and innovation in science, engineering and life sciences, an unprecedented cooperation between the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and Shantou Municipal Government, Technion, and STU.”

The highly anticipated addition to the Technion is scheduled to open its doors in October. Some 240 students from several provinces in China have enrolled for study at the Technion branch, which offers three engineering programs: chemical, material science and biotechnology and food engineering. Preparatory studies begin this month and the first semester begins in October.

Israel, Guangdong, billionaire team up to found Chinese Silicon Valley

2017-08-16 09:54

Global Times Editor: Mo Hong'e

A Chinese university has teamed up with an Israeli counterpart to found China's first science and technology institution jointly established by domestic and foreign institutions, with funding from one of Asia's richest men.

The Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) held its opening ceremony in Shantou, South China's Guangdong Province on Monday, with the stated goal of being a a Chinese version of US tech hub Silicon Valley.

The GTIIT was established by Shantong University and the Israel Institute of Technology (IIT) after being officially approved by China's Ministry of Education in December 2016, the news site caixin.com reported.

Two of the key private individuals involved have drawn people's attention, namely billionaire businessman Li Ka-shing and Li Jiange, a prominent figure in Chinese finance and economic research. The caixin.com report said they "happened to share the same view on establishing a Chinese Silicon Valley."

Li Jiange, who is also the president of GTIIT, told caixin.com that he hopes the university will find a new way of recruiting students outside the national college entrance exam.

There are currently 10 IIT teachers working at GTIIT - 60 percent of the total - and this number will increase by 10 each year, according to news portal ycwb.com

Students at the school - which currently number 222 - will also be able to study for a term in Israel in their third or fourth year, ycwb.com said.

The Guangdong and Shantou governments plan to spend a total of 900 million yuan ($ 147 million) on GTIIT and Li Ka-shing has donated 130 million yuan, said the caixin.com report.

China has some of the most potent martial arts techniques at home. Why are they learning the CQC techniques from Israeli forces? Weapons I can understand.

Lol, No need to be angry guys...

It's a very well known internationally that Chinese people worship Jewish people so crazy. It's something to be proud of by the Chinese.

Jewish people dominate world economy and science. Learning from them is never wrong. One day China can be wealthy and advanced too, like Jewish people. I hope so.

The same thing happened in the mainland China. Communism came from Jewish, Mao Zedong saved China with his cultural revolution by successfully annihilated Chinese civilization. That is why you people today are good of making money and advanced in science, because you learned a lot from the Jewish with his communism.

If you disagree that Chinese people is not inferior compare with the Jewish, give some proves then!

Second only to the no 1 Jewish lead USA.

If one day, China became no 1, that because of the population factor. The excuse India use to claim his superpower status, despite billion of their people living in the poverty and dying.

Do you believe that China GDP per capita will surpass USA? Even Jewish American averages income? You know it's impossible, right?

I believe China GDP per capita will surpass that of USA and Israel. Why not? Look at Hong Kong, Macau or Singapore. They have much less natural resources and support from the Western world, unlike Israel, but all of them have per capita twice that of Israel.

In addition, Jew have never dominated world economy and science. What time in history?

China dominated world economy and science for almost 2000 years, until around 1700, but when Jew?

I'm also Indonesia Chinese born in Sumatra, mostly my family and their friends still hold traditional Chinese cultures, their religion, way of life. From his comment I think this guy don't know anything about us. Or maybe just trolling and derail the topic, just ignore him.
I surprised to know this China CQB training with Israelis officer, I read that their well-known the best in urban combat.

That's because Israel have a rich experience in urban terror , also their reputation is well know how they handle Urban terror , that's something similar what China experience in Xinjiang, urban terror . And the best way is learn from the country have the most sophisticated way, techniques and experiences in this matter.
