The Mahinda Rajapaksa government, which included the likes of Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who paraded as patriots, had allowed the ‘economic hit men’ from China to invade Sri Lanka, causing serious geopolitical implications for Indo-Lanka relations, UNP MP Harsha de Silva said yesterday.

He told a news conference in Colombo that the SLFP and leftist political parties, who were all now part of the Rajapaksa regime, used to unfairly accuse the UNP of mortgaging the economy to the West, but they had beaten all administrations since Independence, by virtually selling the entire country to the Chinese.

Having obtained unsustainable high interest loans from China for various projects, the government was not in a position to pay them back, Dr. de Silva said, adding that it was now trying to convert debt to equity as evident by Minister Sarath Amunugama’s recent statement that China should be permitted to own and operate the Norochcholai coal fired power plant.

Dr. de Silva said that the China Harbour Company had already acquired 85 percent of the Colombo South Port Terminal for a period of 35 years and considering the free reign it enjoyed, the entire terminal would be within its control very soon.

Eighty percent of transshipment at the Colombo Port was Indian based and they obviously would have reservations about going through the Chinese dominated CSPT, knowing very well that the Rajapaksa government allegedly manipulated the paper work which prevented Indian companies from bidding for a stake, Dr. de Silva observed.

The China Harbour company, the MP said, could not win an open tender for the Colombo Port Breakwater, but was given the contract on a platter to construct the first phase of the Hambantota Port and Hambantota Stadium.

Thank god we are building our own transshipment container terminal in kochi. Now no need to rely on Colombo. China can take over the Colombo port.

Friends,

I don't see this as a threat to India. To understand this we will have to go in past. When Sri Lanka was desperately looking for some foreign investment, they had offered it to us. However, our economy was not in a position to support it, that's the reason Chinese jumped on it. We are in the same situation(economy wise) which chinese were in 1990-1995. They had money and they knew that India will be a threat in future so they build up a good relationship with our neighboring country.

This is exactly what we are doing with LOOK EAST Policy. Now we have a economy which can support us and our neighboring country. Now, we have very good relationship with many country circling china. So, what china has done in and around 2000, we are doing it now.

Every country has its right to safeguard its interest. If china think that India can be a threat in future, It has all the rights to save itself. It applies to us as well. I would not mind this kind of relationship, as this is not used for military purpose which chinese can use in future.

I do not support our PM MMS, however I love his LOOK EAST Policy. Through this we are giving back what we got from china.

I don't know why people always gives UNDUE credits to manmohan singh for everything

You need to update ur knowledge the LOOK EAST Policy is coined by the modern day Chanakya former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao :yahoo:

After P.V. Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpaee followed it and now MMS is just following a tradition.

Why should we? If SL wants to be economically dominated by Chinese..who are we to stop them. Just look out that SL does not become a Chinese outpost.

Indeed who cares whether sri.lanka becomes a part of china or not..
our's priority is National defence,,,if presence of china in SL Threatens India..then India will surely put back china from where it came to SL:tup:

. .
Am I missing something here? How is this related to Indian defense? Dont say this is gonna affect India indirectly....
