Chinese drugs with "Made in India" Tag - Interpol probe

Nigeria has taken up with the world police organisation Interpol the issue of fake drugs seized in the African country with a "Made in India" label, allegedly originating in China.
"... We have contacted the Interpol, so the Interpol is looking into the case. We hope to get to the bottom of it," National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Director-General Paul Orhii told reporters on Tuesday.

He said the Chinese authorities have asked the Nigerian government for more information regarding the case.

"They (Chinese) are (investigating) and I think they have made some progress," he said. Nigeria was more vigilant and scrutinising Chinese companies more closely after the seizure, he added.

Orhii, however, said the incident has not affected the image of Indian firms in the country.

"We made it immediately known to everybody that (the drugs) are not made in India," he said on the sidelines of a FICCI meet, adding, "We need to jointly conduct with the Indian government a public awareness campaign about Indian products coming to Nigeria".

Recently, fake drugs carrying the 'Made in India' label were seized in Nigeria, but were allegedly manufactured in China. India took up the issue with China as this could damage the reputation of the 12-billion-dollar Indian pharmaceutical industry in the global market.

Not really. This is much more serious. That was the nigerians protesting to Chinese agencies. This is actually the Nigerian govt taking it up with an international organization for criminal activities. Wonder what the chinese will have to say to CCP if their own citizens were killed by these fake drugs. I guess it wouldnt matter the CCP indulging in such criminal activitites on other countries.

As part of top management, and dealing intimately with the national regulatory authorities as well as our international marketing division, I can tell you pretty confidently that this is a huge international issue that goes beyond ordinary industrial "dumping" that China is known for, and enters the realm of criminal conspiracy involving the lives of millions in poor countries with rudimentary regulatory, quality control, and governmental procurement frameworks.

Ask your govt about this, if they able to tell you.

Read African news etc. its all their with evidence , which confiscated by them. If you want to see evidence go to Nigeria, its their.

Its not our fault of your govt hide news from you.

if they have gone to the interpol with the issue, it is quite serious. why does a chinese company want to put a "made in India" tag? sure that brand china wont sell? India is a pretty big player in pharma - are chinese companies using that?. whatever the case be, it is a gross violation of trust. It will marginalise the brand image of India (I mean, for sure if it was a good product, you wouldnt want India to take credit! only if its not upto the mark, you would want to sell it using a more popular brand name!!)

The issue intitially for the big name Indian companies was about their brands being illegally misused which was putting us in very bad light internationally with various Governments who got these fake consignments as well as various international health organisations. Now it is very clear where these drugs originated from. But the issue still is that these drugs are not only fake, but they are unsafe, having been made in non-GMP facilities, with zero QA/QC, using non-registered bulk, and zero animal or human clinical data on safety and efficacy. This is the main issue today - human lives, and not just dollars and cents.

is it so hard to find a photo about this propaganda? even if it's true ,is it real necessary to defame every chinese company for someone's individual behavior,shouldn't we ban everything from india just because their beer killed a lot recent day,shouldn't we ban everything from US just because the "sudan i" was found in KFC, do you think melamine was only found in china's dairy products ?abbott, mead johnson and nestle all on the list!it's not just china have food security problem!

It is not propaganda, though you are entitled to your own opinion. Necessary steps at the international level have already been taken.

It is true. We even know the factories from where these drugs have come from.

No one is defaming the entire Chinese pharma industry.

All Chinese pharma companies do not make spurious drugs, and sell them in the "Made in India" guise.

However, the ones who did, were all Chinese.

Many Indian pharma companies do business with chinese counterparts because of cost.

However, from the point of view of IPR infringements and government safeguards of patented formula and technologies not only being absent, but in most cases overriden by the govt. itself in collaboration with the chinese partner, most Indian and Western pharma companies are very wary of joint collaborations and partnerships and setting up joint facilities with chinese counterparts in China in order to leverage China's manufacturing muscle and cost advantages.

These are facts.

Not only Drugs , Made in India tag clothes also confiscated in Nigeria which is made in china. Gulsar bike made in china sold in south American is nothing but copy of successful Indian bike pulsar.
