ISLAMABAD: There may have been no exodus of Chinese workers from Pakistan after the Karachi University attack, but they look less confident about the country’s ability to protect them.

“The Chinese confidence in Pakistan’s security system’s ability to protect their citizens and their projects is seriously shaken,” said Senator Mushahid Hussain, chairman of the Senate Defence Committee.

Senator Mushahid, who led a Senate delegation to the Chinese embassy last week to express his condolences over the loss of three Chinese lives in a suicide attack on their van on the university’s premises last month, was sharing the mood on the Chinese side in a conversation with Dawn on Friday.

The Karachi University attack was the third terrorist attack on Chinese citizens on Pakistani soil in a year.

“It has caused serious concern and understandable indignation in China. More so, the pattern of attacks is so recurring and it’s clear that Pakistani promises of ‘foolproof security’ are mere words, not matched by countermeasures on the ground,” he maintained.

Criticising the security arrangements, he said security agencies seemed to have been caught napping. “If such attacks continue, not just Chinese but other foreign investors will be forced to review their role in Pakistan,” he said.

There were reports on social media of Chinese workers leaving Pakistan in large numbers after the attack.
A Chinese source denied such reports, adding that it was a regular movement of Chinese workers and citizens living in Pakistan on a weekly flight from Karachi that was presented by some as an “exodus”.

The source, however, noted that terrorist attacks do impact the confidence of the Chinese community living here.

FIA’s cybercrime wing said the tweet claiming that thousands of Chinese were leaving from Karachi’s airport because of threats was a “baseless and panic-creating video tweet”.

Head of FIA Cyber Crime Sindh Imran Riaz told Dawn that action would be taken against the person who tweeted it once the ongoing investigations were complete.

At a media conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lijian Zhao expressed hope that “the plot of terrorist forces to undermine the two countries’ mutual trust and cooperation will not succeed”.

He said the Chinese side would work with Pakistan to conduct a thorough investigation, reveal the truth, bring the perpetrators to justice, and explain to the people of both countries.

China, he maintained, attached importance to Pakistan’s strengthening security measures to protect Chinese personnel, projects and institutions in Pakistan and stood ready to work together with the Pakistani side to ensure safe and smooth progress in bilateral cooperation and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The Chinese are not blind or deaf. Of course, we have enough knowledge of Pakistan's domestic situation.
Since the Chinese government is willing to propose the CPEC plan to Pakistan, the Chinese people are ready to bear risks and losses with their partners.
We are also a country that has tasted war and pain, we are not afraid of bleeding.
CPEC will continue to be successful, and terrorist attacks cannot stop us.

Dear being a Pakistani, my own confidence is shaken in the security of Pakistan while in the hands of a bunch of criminals, absconders, and thieves.

Dear thanks for your motivational post. Still, we are grieved for the loss of precious lives of our guests from China. RIP to the departed souls and patience to their family and friends.

Those higher ups in the army need to get a grip of this potential disaster. These self serving generals need to get the hell out of politics and focus on internal and external security.

This bufoon called Bajwa can not go soon enough. He spends more time pandering to yanks and westerners and pulling strings with domestic crooks that he is failing his number one job to protect the nation.

We are one or two attacks away from a disaster. But they are courting enemies of Pakistan to continue these attacks.

We should be in a war like state against terrorist attacks to safeguard CPEC. This is exactly what the enemy wants.

The establishment and pmln and ppp dont give a sh1t, they will burn the house down to get what they want.

Thank you for your kind words. People of Pakistan are now fighting a war against the imported regime imposed on us through their local benefactors, people whose real job is to protect Pakistan against all external and internal threats are unfortunately involved in manipulating and engineering politics. This is what IK is fighting for real freedom and the people of Pakistan back him up. We will need all the support from our Chinese friends against this US-sponsored criminal and corrupt regime, and we thank you for standing with us.

Well if you give an opening to one country to interfere in your matters and change the government on their behest, then China would not think twice to do the same.

Just wait, it might be a free for all here, if this continues.

I would expect regular Chinese nationals to think twice before taking a job in Pakistan.. at least for the short term. But the rulers of China will not change their strategic direction because of such minor events.

BLA is a terrorist organization supported by India , they will pay heavily for what they had done. China will keep investing in Pakistan, nothing is gonna stop us.

This was my exact thought when I read the OP's post. Unfortunately, those who are suppose to protect us are involved in aidding such criminals.

The thing is that Pakistan is battle ground and west is using all it's cards to keep Pakistan weak and out of Chinese influence, what China needs to do now is to start supporting elements in Pakistan who are pro China / pro independent foreign policy that is one way which will also help Pakistan to be independent, further China now has to be assertive on other countries who are against CPEC and hurting it by one way or another, since long it's US plan to weaken Pakistan and make it submissive state of India so India can be used against China.

The ball is in court of China, if it doesn't take necessary steps then this region will be in turmoil and will hamper Chinese interests.

Now Ukraine and Pakistan are important for China as after that west will come directly towards China, south china sea and Taiwan will be areas where they will drag China into some sort of conflict.

Read that again, but slowly…

It is very tempting to welcome further foreign influence in a knee-jerk reaction to current affairs, but freedom is taken, not given, brother

Chinese investments are well-received in Pakistan and their reputation is positive in Pakistan.

They should not get involved in Pakistani politics - unstable domain of Pakistan. They have no need to.

Pakistan is friendly to China but camp politics does not suit Pakistan. Imran Khan have also stated this on record.

You are advocating Cold War in all its glory but you do not understand consequences of it on our soil. You need to see and understand the bigger picture.

Pakistan - USA problems are (our) to fix. China cannot fix this.

Could China fix DPRK - USA problems? Could China fix Venezeula - USA problems?

Think with clear mind, dear.

As if we are confident about our compromised security apparatus.. the Chinese have every right to be concerned. They’re investing generously in a country and the return is dead Chinese in boxes. The only thing good our military is at is grabbing prime land on the pretext of security for CPEC. Look at how they’ve literally occupied half of Gwadar’s hammerhead which will later be developed into some Naval housing. And the sad thing about this is that there was an attack on PC Gwadar literally meters away from this land grabbed on the pretext of providing security to CPEC.

On a related note;

I have attached a picture of how PAF wedding hall was renamed into officers mess after Supreme courts crackdown.

GHQ on the other hand is busy occupying 3 prime sectors of Islamabad. Maybe they should relocate to PM house as Bajwa is more busy there. To give you a rough idea, our military’s setup in the capital will be many times bigger than the government and its institutions.
