Chinese company awarded contract to reconstruct Lahore airport: report

The Pakistani government has awarded a contract worth nearly $382 million to a Chinese company to reconstruct Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport, the Chinese state-owned People's Dailynewspaper reported Tuesday.

China Construction Third Engineering Bureau won the 2.6 billion RMB contract to engineer, procure, and construct the reimagined Lahore airport, which will become Pakistan's largest after the reconstruction is completed, the report claimed.

"It is the largest project that the Third Engineering Bureau has undertaken overseas, marking another important achievement in Belt and Road construction," the newspaper, which is a Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece, said in its report.

Prior to this, the same Chinese company was awarded a number of major projects in Pakistan including the Karachi-Lahore Expressway between Sukkur and Multan, Lahore's Arfa Software Technology Park, and The Centaurus Hotel.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has championed what China formally calls the “One Belt, One Road” or OBOR initiative to build a new Silk Road linking Asia, Africa and Europe, a landmark programme to invest billions of dollars in infrastructure projects including railways, ports and power grids.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship programme of OBOR. The construction of an international airport in Gwadar is also part of CPEC.

It will be Pakistan’s largest airport after reconstruction, and local infrastructure will be improved too. It is the largest project that the Third Engineering Bureau has undertaken overseas, marking another important achievement in Belt and Road construction.

It is not the first time that the Third Engineering Bureau has won a bid in Pakistan. Major projects, including the Karachi-Lahore Expressway between Sukker and Multan, Arfa Software Technology Park, and The Centaurus Hotel, are all projects of the Bureau.

decision makers for expansions are not idiots they know these things costly but since its airport there is huge money bag in there , just imagine the airport with bad management or over crowd airport that will lead to more delays for airplanes or airlines . higher costs for airlines will directly reflect to airport which will lead to fewer costumers so at the end it will be airport or hosting city that lose money . since we talking about airplanes even minutes are important and the costs in this industry is really huge so its more important to have better airport with better efficiency and the costs will turn to benefits in few years .
on the other hand its a race between cities and countries so having better things sooner is better for economy .

Someone who frequents the Lahore airport, believe me it needs an expansion very badly. There are only two luggage carousels in the international terminal so imagine what happens when more than two flights land simultaneously, i can tell you it creates havoc. I don't know what the planners were thinking as Lahore is the 2nd largest airport and caters to people from a very large area.
