Posts circulated on Chinese social media this week saying a 14-year-old girl had died in the central city of Ruzhou after falling ill in a quarantine facility and being denied prompt medical care.

The reports caused renewed anger, at a sensitive time for the country’s rulers.

China’s political elite are holding a key Communist Party meeting in Beijing this week, expected to secure a historic third term for President Xi Jinping, with the country’s propaganda and security apparatus on high alert for any source of instability.

Unverified videos on the Chinese version of TikTok appeared to show a person lying in a bunk bed suffering seizures, while others in the room screamed for help.

“At the start the kid was fine… then she went (into quarantine) for four days and had a high fever and now she’s gone,” a woman — described in other videos as the child’s aunt — tells viewers, crying.

AFP could not independently verify the videos, and calls to Ruzhou city’s propaganda, health and Covid prevention departments on Friday were not answered.

Hashtags disabled

Chinese media, which have given cursory attention to similar lockdown-related scandals in the past, were noticeably silent this week on the Ruzhou case.

By Friday afternoon, censors had removed nearly all traces of the incident from the Chinese internet, disabling Weibo hashtags for “Ruzhou Girl” and “Girl from Ruzhou dies in quarantine”, and removing most of the videos mentioning the girl’s alleged death.

The hashtag page for “Ruzhou Girl” had recorded 255,000 views and 158 posts on Friday morning, according to the official statistics at the top of the page, though only four posts remained visible before the page was blocked completely later in the day.

“Have the lessons of Shanghai been forgotten so completely?” one of the last remaining posts on the page asked, referring to the megacity’s lockdown in the spring that left people without adequate food and supplies.

The woman says the girl “had convulsions, vomiting and a high fever, and didn’t get medical attention in time”, complaining that local health authorities did not respond to calls while the child was in critical condition

Over the past week, the death of a 14-year-old girl at a Ruzhou Covid quarantine site in Pingdingshan, Henan Province, has sparked anger on Chinese social media. The girl, Guo Jingjing (郭晶晶), was isolated at the Ruzhou Wanji Senior High School Central Isolation Point (汝州万基高级中隔离点), where she was quarantined together with her family – although they were separated at the site with men and women staying on different floors. Two days after Jingjing arrived at the isolation point on October 14, she developed a fever that increasingly got worse. Her body started shaking and twisting, and she was speaking unclearly. According to a lengthy Weibo post about the incident by Toutiao author Li Xiao’an (李小安), the girl’s father, Mr. Guo (郭先生), stated that there were no doctors at the quarantine site and that the staff did not take care of his daughter despite the family pleading for help multiple times. Mr. Guo allegedly also tried calling the national emergency numbers, but could not get through. Eventually, after receiving many reports, the quarantine site staff sent the girl to the Ruzhou Fourth People’s Hospital in the evening, where she passed away approximately eight hours later. Mr. Guo disclosed that he had been informed by doctors afterward that his daughter passed away due to complications caused by high fever, namely encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in combination with pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs). The doctor allegedly stated that a more timely medical treatment could have potentially saved her.

Following Jingjing’s death, her father allegedly also experienced a lot of problems in making sure her body would be taken to a mortuary. Around noon on October 18, approximately ten hours after Jingjing passed away, the mortuary services could still not be reached. Meanwhile, Jingjing’s other family members were still stuck at the quarantine center.

One video recorded at the quarantine center, which shows the girl shaking and twitching in her bed, was taken offline.

Another video posted on Chinese social media shows a man screaming at the staff at the Ruzhou Wanji Senior High School Central Isolation Point on October 19. The woman filming the scene can be heard crying, saying: “Again, a child has a fever, and no one cares. The day before yesterday, a young girl here also had a fever. There was nobody to turn to. It really scared him. They’re all scared – the parents [adults] feel that they should be able to bear the responsibility [for their children]. These are children – they are their parents’ life. But nobody can bear the responsibility. This is a life. Children are the life of their entire family. Who could put this at risk? Everyone is scared and desperate.” On Weibo, the hashtag “Girl From Ruzhou Dies at Quarantine Site” (#河南汝州女孩隔离点去世#) was taken offline, along with the hashtag “Ruzhou Girl” (#汝州女孩#). “Ruzhou can’t stay silent,” one Weibo blogger wrote. Ruzhou is a county-level city under the administration of Pingdingshan. Although Pingdingshan has not reported any new Covid cases over the past week, Ruzhou still has six areas marked as ‘high risk districts’ (高风险地区), and people have been in lockdown there for over 25 days. There have been a total of 72 confirmed Covid cases at the time of writing. Since China’s famous political commentator Hu Xijin was born in Pingdingshan’s Ruzhou, many Chinese netizens have been calling on him to discuss the case of Jingjing. Many people would like to know more about the circumstances surrounding her death. But Hu Xijin has not yet commented on this topic, and many posts, videos, and images about the incident are currently censored. While official reports about the incident are lacking, Chinese netizens are calling for an official investigation into the matter and the circumstances of the girl’s death, saying that those responsible should be held accountable. On Douyin, there are also many asking the questions that are left unanswered. Why was the girl not allowed to isolate together with her entire family? Why were the emergency hotlines unavailable? Why was there no proper medical care for the patient at the quarantine site? Stories of people not getting the medical help they at isolation centers or at local hospitals due to strict anti-epidemic measures have been circulating on Chinese social media for a long time already. One incident that particularly struck a chord was that of a pregnant woman in Xi’an who lost her baby after medical staff made her wait outside the hospital in light of Covid-19 rules. After the case received nationwide attention, the hospital was ordered to publicly apologize for the incident, and the local Health Commission director also made an apology. For now, there have been no official apologies yet, and so netizens keep on posting despite censorship. “I am speaking out for Guo Jingjing,” one Douyin user wrote, with others lighting up virtual candles for ‘Little Guo’ (小郭), promising that she will not be forgotten.

OMG.. Chinas collapse is immenent......................AGAIN.

.
The news is started by the CIA to create social unrest in China.

CIA is very unhappy.

CIA hopes several people die on the street of China.

These Chinese are CIA assets and "trash-able".

Old story, old tactic.

The more people die, the more bonuses CIA agents get and promotions.

To the parents of the victim, don't be sad if your children die, blame the others plz!

And praise CIA, and pray for the CIA agents' bonuses and promotions.

High five!

There's not enough evidence to prove what the article claims. Certain patients have been known to deteriorate rapidly upon contracting Covid, especially if it causes encephalitis. couple of points to point out, 1. "pleading for help multiple times" is not an acceptable measure of time. 2. the girl did receive emergency medical treatment. 3. Encephalitis has mortality rate of 30% even with the best available treatment.

Chinese covid policy has proven to be the best at keeping its citizens alive and healthy. The fact that one girl's death even makes the news is the proof of that.

Obviously, the report of this girl's death can be directly queried by Baidu. What does the so -called examiner have deleted the traces of almost all events from the Chinese Internet? Creating rumors?

Now they hsve got a life time president too which no other country has.

Sorry, we do not want fake media from western and india. Of cos to you, lying is not something wrong according to your crook moral. :enjoy:

Ah so you claim the initial reply of "fake news outlet" is not insinuating the death did not happen but actually that the news of it being censored is the only fake part.

Do you really think that is what was meant by the post...as that is not what the subsequent post implies.
