As far as Pompeo call is concerned it was related to Afghanistan Peace Process n Pakistan Iran border issue ( military issues ) .

Why doesn't Imran object to such blatant overtaking of his authority?

He obviously would discuss a military matter with the Chief of the military, something that must be alien to you since an Indian general can never rise up the ranks without being a card carrying member of the RSS and worshiping Modi twice a day.

To anyone with a brain though Bajwa answers to IK first, the response to national incidents over the last 2 years are proof of that. In addition to other duties like maintaining defence ties with foreign nations which in some other countries is usually done by the defence/production minister but in Pakistan is far better off in the hands of the military.

One should watch the movie 'Vice', it shows as to how things get played out in real world sometimes. I am not saying that this is the case here, just that the real world is a lot different to one you are likely used too.

PS: Who is to say that this didn't happen without the blessing of IK ?

Totally agree. US has no mainland threat from Canada and Mexico at all, absolutely zero. While Pentagon has tremendous influence in both domestic and foreign police. The president and congress is like merry-go-round, while Pentagon generals group are very much stable.

The most important and long term foreign police influenced by the think tanks sponsored by Pentagon.

While Pakistan has much vital threats from all sides. The turmoil of Afghanistan, Iran (potentially), and of course India. Army play the most important role in Pakistan foreign police and security is a MUST HAVE.
