He didn't lead troops into battle, so I doubt he is down to earth and might get reckless. Both Mao and Deng knew when to quit when they see opposition is too high.

Shanghai police chief got axed. It is a pretty much Xi saying hello to the toad, and the Shanghai clique. A statement of intent that he is ready to escalate, and go into their heartland, unless he gets a full, unconditional submission.

If Xi can put his man as a Shanghai police chief, he can use him to scoop all inside dirt on people in the city, and do the enforcement as well.

Mao is a military and political genius.

But his Great Leap Forward resulted in 20+ million Chinese deaths and his Cultural Revolution stymied economic and scientific development for over a decade, not to mention the massive damage inflicted on Chinese cultural artifacts and the accompanying humiliation/imprisonment of innocent officials. I recall even Brezhnev asking why the Chinese would do such a thing to themselves.

He could be considered a military genius in the 1920s to 1950s but afterwards, his People's War doctrine was hopelessly outdated in actual warfare. I could only imagine how poorly the PLA would have fared if the USSR invaded in 1969. And this is not to mention Mao abolished ranks in the PLA in 1965, which really hurt the military operational structure.

Mao had many opportunities to kill Deng, but Mao never did. Dang is confined, has no freedom, but his living conditions are not bad. He was not beaten and tortured like many others.

That's why Mao is a genius. He knew well that China was incapable of fighting the Soviet Union at that time, so he planned to attack the Soviet Union without causing a major war between the two nations. The plan to attack Dasmanky was a genius idea, a small conflict that sent a powerful message to the Soviet Union.
