Amid the rising apathy between India and China over the Dokhlam dispute with numerous defense researchers being concerned over China trying to wage a proxy war against India, the Ministry of External Affairs recently disclosed that China has not been sharing hydrological data with India for the past three months, beginning May this year.

It is to be noted that the two countries always used to share hydrological data with each other regarding the amount of water being released by China in the rivers flowing through India. However, China has ceased to do so of late, which might be one of the reasons behind the grievous flood that has grasped the entire eastern part of India.

According to the environment and sustainability experts, by doing so, China is trying to target a “water bomb” over India, ravaging a million lives. China has illegally built numerous dams over the rivers flowing through their territory towards India, and if they open the gates all of a sudden, it may pose serious problems in India, killing innumerable people without shooting a single round of gunfire.

What is posing a bigger threat to India is the fact that India’s main three rivers have emerged from Tibet, which is under Chinese control. The largest river is the Brahmaputra, a 2700-km-long river that flows through Assam and Arunachal Pradesh before entering Bangladesh. And China has built several dams over it.

According to Santosh Rai of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, China may as well use the Brahmaputra as a means of “water bomb” against India. If China opens all the dams over the Brahmaputra together, the entire eastern part of India may be ravaged by floods within hours!

The second-largest river to enter India through Tibet is Sutlej. It flows through Himachal Pradesh and Punjab before merging with Indus and entering Pakistan. It is on this river that India’s largest dam, the Bhakra Nangal Dam, has been built. The third-most important river to enter India from Tibet is the Indus itself. It originates in Tibet and gushes through Kashmir into Pakistan before flowing into the Arabian Sea. Now, once again, China has built numerous dams over these two rivers in Tibet and if China opens even a few dams, it shall be disastrous to the entire northern India.

Defense expert Anil Gupta is of the view that if China initiates a water war by utilizing their dams, not only the entire area of Punjab will be flooded but the Bhakra Nangal Dam will also be brought to a standstill, instigating a water explosion which shall be no less terrifying than a nuclear blast.

Meanwhile, strategic expert Brahma Chellani has said that the Chinese attack lures large over India, especially because the Doklam controversy has entered its third month. He further said that by not furnishing the hydrological data to India, China has started taking it as a political weapon to curb India’s power.

It is to be noted that this hydrological data is required by India to predict and issue flood warnings and also share relief materials effectively across the flood-grasped regions.

There are close to 100,000 Chinese refugees in India. There are Chinese-origin Indian citizens - am not even counting those since I consider them Indian. Singapore has nothing to do with China. Even the name "Singapore" is derived from Sanskrit.
