New Delhi: The huge expansion of China's nuclear submarine building facilities has the world, and also India, concerned.

The Huludao Shipyard, once the Bohai Shipyard in Liaoning Province has more than tripled in size and is now capable of making 7 nuclear-powered submarines simultaneously.

The original construction area was about 300,000 sq metres, but it is now three times the size. So, instead of being able to make 2 submarines simultaneously, it can make 7.

As a result, the expansion of the Chinese nuclear submarine fleet is likely in the near future. Currently, the Chinese Navy has 13 nuclear-powered attack submarines or SSNs and SSBNs or nuclear-powered ballistic submarines. The Chinese Navy has 1 Xia class, 6 Jin-class and 6 Shang class submarines. This is estimated to grow to 36 nuclear-powered submarines in 15 years. There could be 12 SSBNs, which carry long-range missiles and 24 SSNs.

The new submarines could be bigger and more capable. The Tang class vessels can carry 24 submarine launched ballistic missiles as opposed to 12 by the current ones. The Sui class vessels at 8000 tonnes will be bigger than the Shang class ones.

India has begun manufacturing the Arihant-class nuclear powered submarines and leasing nuclear-powered attack submarines from Russia. Nuclear-powered submarines have more capability than other submaines, though both are necessary. The chief of defence staff, General Bipin Rawat, has already spoken out about having more submarines, especially conventional submarines, pointing out that previous Indian Navy chiefs had often spoken about bolstering the submarine fleet.

Submarines bridge the gap of security between now when surface ships are adequately protected from older missiles, to newer future ADS on ships that can protect from newer missiles. As subs are not vulnerable to missiles hitting them when submerged.

The main threat to subs in the future are small unmanned sub drones. War gaming drones is not my specialty, too many factors and uncertain outcomes and lack of info on specs. Though I do see trouble in this area that needs a proper defense. In a future era where subs are vulnerable, once ships become protected against newer missiles, excess subs can be part of the fleet and launch missiles for the fleet and offer some defense for the fleet, until the problem of drone subs is figured out. As the problem with air defense systems that work against HGVs and new missiles has to be solved. New tactics in sub warfare have to be troubleshooted.

Two possible defenses to protect subs when drone subs are swarming:
(1) helicopter carriers protect them with ASW helicopters - subs become part of the fleet - helicopters hunt the drone
(2) ASW used against drone subs, by submarines, may even having subs command drone subs to hunt the enemy drone subs, or something like that. Possibly having drone subs commanded by subs, and take hits from torpedos/drone subs as some ADS for subs.

The depth at which drone subs can reach could be concerning.

The Chinese are much smarter than me and can figure out the vulnerabilities and better strategies in SW and ASW. These are a few ideas.

In my estimation, the real number could be as high as 3000 for China. I am certain even Pakistan has crossed 300 nuclear devices by now.
Remember Nasr tactical missiles using miniature warheads. How many of them are there to form a credible battleground deterrence! Which has forced India to give up their cold start strategy!!

SIPRI is just an estimate using publicly available sources. simply put, only the chinese government knows what the actual number of nukes china has. everyone else just guesses, and as a member of the P5 with domestic tech and sources of uranium, china is not obligated to show anyone anything nor release any nuclear information.
