China’s largest Muslim ally broke ranks to criticize its repression of the Muslim Uighur minority

Pakistan, China's closest ally in the Muslim world, openly criticized its treatment of its Uighur population, a majority-Muslim ethnic minority living in the western Chinese region in Xinjiang, earlier this week.

It marks the strongest condemnation of China's repression of the population yet.

Noorul Haq Qadri, Pakistan's federal minister for religious affairs, warned that Beijing's strict regulation of Uighur activity fuels extremism rather than counters terrorism, Pakistani media reported.

"The placement of restrictions increases the chances of an extremist viewpoint growing in reaction," Qadri told China's ambassador to Pakistan, Yao Xing, on Wednesday according to Dawn newspaper.

His comments directly challenge China's justification of its crackdown on Xinjiang— known to Uighurs as East Turkestan — which are that it counters terrorism and is "training" people to avoid religious extremism.

Qadri on Wednesday also called for a softer approach from Beijing to curb intolerance and promote religious harmony in Xinjiang, Pakistan's The Nation newspaper reported.

He also proposed for Pakistani religious scholars to visit Xinjiang.

Yao appeared to agree, reportedly saying: "Exchange of viewpoints between religious scholars of both countries is vital for better interfaith relations."

Yao also invited Qadri to visit China, Dawn reported, although it's not clear whether this would entail a trip to Xinjiang.

Li Xiaojun, a spokesman for China's state council information office, told reporters last week that sending Uighurs to detention centers was "not mistreatment," but "to establish professional training centers, educational centers."

Turkey spoke out against China's treatment of Uighurs in 2009 and 2015, which resulted in Beijing repeatedly warning Istanbul not to "twist facts" or "poison ties and derail cooperation" between the two countries.

Whether Islamabad will suffer the same fate is not clear. Pakistan is China's biggest economic ally in the Muslim world, with the two countries forming in 2013 the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor — a massive $62 billion partnership consisting of transport and energy projects.

China has invested between $1 trillion and $8 trillion in its BRI deals around the world, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The BRI is one of Xi Jinping's pet projects.

Do not take it as criticism but a valuable suggestion from a brother who keeps China's best interest at heart. Repression will only fuel extremism and terrorism. Instead China can take Pakistan's help in this regard to bring Uighur into the main stream. Sending them to detention centers no matter how good the intentions are, will never settle in well.

It's crazy how Pakistanis went berserk about some drawing cartoon competition but so docile and not even a raising a voice when real actual muslim human beings are involved. Shows priorities really well.

So at least Indians can not accuse Pakistan of not saying anything over this issue. China won't tolerate anyone meddling with our domestic issues, big or small.

They did and we are disappointed, we never meddle with their domestic issues.

i think it shouldn't have come on media, we can discuss all these issues in close doors. Pakistan obviously always wish good for China. there is lot of hate speech and propaganda regarding uyghurs emanating from hostile countries.

To understand China' concerns and mentality one needs to learn some Chinese recent history.
This incident plunged China into a century of national humiliation, religions backed by foreign elements, tens of millions died and China broke into pieces, the wound is still raw and Chinese government and people will never let it happen again.

Yes. I fully support staunch atheist government. All governments should be atheist and nation is always bigger than any religion. Atheism will take over the world soon.

When a mullah is involved than how you can think that he will not try to get maximum publicity. We should let the China deal with her extremists the way they deem fit, As matter of fact our own track record dealing and controlling the radicals is not as such that we can advise others.

It was not criticism and surely not for media consumption but a sincere suggestion to help its brother counter the problem through proper scholarship. And the consensus was reached in the meeting between the minister of the religious affairs and the high commissioner of China for Pakistan play some active role and that's why the high commissioner invited the minister to visit and meet the people. Official scholars who will preach to the community to focus on the real spirit of Islam i.e. love and harmony but at the same time encouraging the govt of China to not curb their religious freedom or interfere in their lives as long as it does not affect the law and order. For example, if people are paying taxes and following the normal laws like traffic rules and other common rules for the maintenance of the peace and tranquility, the govt should be okay with them. However, banning religious freedom, like the right to worship, wearing the religious dress etc should not be the concern of the govt since it does not hurt anyone and it is a fundamental right of a human being.
We want consolidate our already strong bond of friendship and long term partnership by eliminating any potential irritants that can be exploited by our common enemies in the long run.

@haidian We cannot control ones freedom of speech but the state stance is clear, we stood on china's side and always will.

What China does is to maintain peace and stability in China, it won't endanger any other countries teritorial integrity, peace and stability. What some countries support is to destablize China and undermine China's territorial integrity. Non interference of eath other's domestic affairs is the bottomline of the Chinese foreign policies.

Hardly a domestic issue when Uighurs are found imvolved in terrorism in Pak (affiliated with TTP & other groups).

When spouses of Pakistani citizens are illegally detained for “re-education programs”?

Those so called re-education camps are just baloney made up by western media. and those indeed being detained must have done something not allowed by the law.

We have vocational training school all over China , they only became re education camps when found in Xinjiang by the western media.
