Are you aware of the current Chinese advances in nanotechnology, drug delivery, quantum cryptography, material science, etc.?

in terms of advanced science and technologies, there is a clear 30 years gap between China and the US/EU. nothing to feel excited.

The US is the world's technological leader. Oftentimes, the US licenses its technology to its allies in Europe, Japan, South Korea, and perhaps Taiwan. The US and the aforementioned allies are all democracies. In democracies, any disgruntled employee can carry the knowledge or download the vital information and offer it for sale.

The point is that it is relatively easy to close the gap on the technological leader. You can pay for the information from disgruntled employees or employees that are heavily-in-debt.

As listed in my thread, "Greater China outnumbers German patents," there is a plentiful supply of native patents from Japan, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan.

It will not take 30 years to close the technological gap with the leader. If you have lots of money, the technological gap can be closed quickly because you can pay for it from former employees, buy it from countries that conduct their own R&D, reverse engineer, license, joint-venture, umm...spy (...did I really say spy? I meant "borrow"), read published scientific articles, read patent applications for hints, conduct your own R&D, etc.

However, when you talk about cutting-edge science, it will indeed take generations to nurture free-thinking scientists. The ultimate goal is to develop large numbers of Nobel prize winners in the hard sciences. The endeavor is risky, expensive, multi-generational, and the outcome is far from certain. And if you succeed, you can be sure that your competitors will spy on you. (Did I say spy again?!)
